CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Navy men’s cross country team was picked to finish first in the Patriot League Preseason Poll, announced by the league office Wednesday. The Mids captured the 2013 league title and have won five of the previous six.

Navy tallied 158 total points and garnered 14 of the 20 first-place votes. League runner-up Lehigh earned 145 points and five of the remaining first-place votes for second in the poll, while American recorded the final first-place vote and 126 points to round out the top three.

Army and Boston University were not far behind, tallying 112 and 104 points respectively for fourth and fifth place. Bucknell (87), Holy Cross (61), Colgate (49), Lafayette (30) and Loyola (28) rounded out the group.

Navy returns nine letterwinners, including last season’s top performer junior Steve Schroeder (Monticello, Ill.). Schroeder placed first for Navy in all five races he competed in. The Mids also return three all-conference runners, Sam Peckham (Jr., Valenica, Calif.), Zach Hebda (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Kyle Davis (Sr., North Brunswick, N.J.).

Head coach Al Cantello returns to the helm for the 47th season, having accrued a 242-70-1 career record and a 35-10-1 mark against Army. Cantello will help guide Navy in 2014 in search for its sixth league title in seven seasons, beginning with the Fordham Fiasco in Bronx, New York on Sept. 6 at 10:00 a.m.
