CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Navy men's cross country runners Bill Prom (Sr./New Berlin, Wis.) and Dominic DellaPelle (Fr./Kennett Square, Pa.) have been distinguished as the Patriot League Runner and Rookie of the Week, respectively, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon. The sweep of the Patriot League's weekly awards is the first for any school in league history.
Prom became just the second runner in Patriot League history to earn runner-of-the-week kudos in back-to-back weeks. The only other runner in league history to accomplish the feat also donned the Navy blue and gold, as John Olsen claimed the honor in two-consecutive weeks in 2007.
In the Navy Invitational last Saturday in Annapolis, Prom led the Midshipmen across the finish line for the second time in as many races he had run in this fall. The Navy team captain finished fourth overall out of 117 runners and completed the hot and humid 8k race in 24:59.1, just 20.8 seconds off individual champion Matt Llano's time from Richmond.
DellaPelle produced the team's sixth-fastest time and 29th overall mark on Saturday with a time of 26:32.6. He has finished among the team's top-seven runners in each of Navy's three meets this season.
With the help of Prom and DellaPelle, Navy topped the field of 14 teams in the Navy Invitational. The Midshipmen finished with a team score of 64 points, 16 fewer than second-place Richmond. It was Navy's second-straight team victory, as it won the 16-team Fordham Invitational one week before.
The Midshipmen (0-0) will run at historic Van Cortlandt Park for the second time in 2008 on Saturday, this time for the Iona Meet of Champions. Race time is slated for 10:15 a.m.
