Dawson Podlena Named Patriot League Rookie Runner of the Week
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – In recognition of his victory at the Delaware State Farm Run on Friday in Smyrna, Del., freshman Dawson Podlena was selected by the Patriot League as the conference’s M-F Athlete Male Rookie Runner of the Week.
Racing at the 5,000-meter Delaware State Cross Country Course, Podlena (Fr., Topeka, Kan.) clocked in with a time of 16:29.9 to finish in first place in a field of 48. Battling down the stretch with teammate Rob Graham (Phoenix, Ariz.), Podlena edged his fellow freshman by 0.3 seconds. The two Mids finished well ahead of the next runner, Donovan Mundy from Maryland Eastern Shore, who completed the 5K at 16:37.2.
On the strength of Podlena’s win and four other top-10 results, Navy won the team event with a score of 28 points. This is the Kansas native’s second top-10 finish of 2017, as he crossed the line in tenth at the season opening Salisbury Fall Classic on Sept. 2.
As a program, Navy has now received a weekly award from the Patriot League in each of the first three weeks as Quinn Schneider was named the Rookie of the Week on Sept. 5 before Kevin Murray earned the league’s nod as Runner of the Week on Sept. 12.
Navy will continue early season action this Saturday in Minneapolis, Minn. at the Roy Griak Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota. The nationally-renown event is set to kick off at 1:00 p.m. on Sept. 23.
