Men’s Cross Country Up for Challenge at Paul Short Run
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy men’s cross country team will continue ramping up its 2017 level of competition with action versus some of the nation’s best at the Paul Short Run on Friday morning. The Mids will be one of 41 teams participating in the 8k Gold Race at 11:00 a.m. at Lehigh University’s Goodman Campus Cross Country Course.
This year is littered with nationally-ranked programs and more from Power 5 conferences. The top-ranked team in Friday’s race, include No. 10 Iona, No. 17 Georgetown and No. 28 Columbia, while the SEC will be represented by Georgia and Mississippi State, the Big 10 by Rutgers, the ACC with Georgia Tech and the Pac-12 with Arizona.
Amongst Mid-Atlantic regionally-ranked schools: (1) Georgetown, (8) Villanova, (11) Lehigh, (12) Rutgers and (14) La Salle will all be running in the Gold Race with the Mids, who currently rank second in the region.
Last year, Navy placed sixth of 38 programs with 184 team points. Then-senior Lucas Stalnaker led the Mids with a 22nd-place finish and time of 24:07. Cory Donley and Jake Brophy will return in 2017 after placing 33rd and 48th, respectively with times of 24:17 and 24:25.
Navy has won the men’s race three times with the most recent team title coming in 2014.
Besides challenging itself versus a national field, Friday will also serve as a course preview for the Mids as they will return to the Goodman Campus Course for the Patriot League and NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals later in the season.
