Kevin Murray Named Patriot Runner of the Week
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – In recognition of his outstanding performance on Friday at the Paul Short Run, a national meet held at Lehigh University, sophomore Kevin Murray was named on Monday as the Patriot League M-F Athlete Male Runner of the Week.
Taking on a talented field of 359 runners, Murray (So., Wilmington, Del.) navigated the 8,000 meters of the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course in Bethlehem, Pa. to the tune of a 23:57 time. The time placed Murray 17th overall and within seven seconds of finishing amongst the top-10. His time was a new career-best as he surpassed his previous best of 24:36 by nearly 40 seconds. He was the top-finishing Patriot League competitor at the meet.
With Murray’s 17th-place finish leading the way, Navy placed fifth overall as a team with 193 points. Navy’s second, third and fourth counters finished respectively in 31st, 34th and 35th to aid the Mids’ effort. As a program, Navy was the top placing Patriot League squad as Army (7th-284 points), American (19th-529), Lehigh (20th-541) and Boston U. (22nd-599) also competed in the Men’s Gold 8K Race on Friday.
As a program, Navy has now received a weekly award from the Patriot League on four separate occasions was Quinn Schneider and Dawson Podlena have earned Rookie of the Week nods on Sept. 5 and Sept. 19, respectively, while Murray took the Runner of the Week honor earlier this season on Sept. 12.
Navy will step away from competition this weekend as the team turns its attention squarely to the 2017 Army-Navy Star Meet. The cross country star will be on the line in Wappingers Falls, N.Y. next Saturday, Oct. 14 between the Mids and Black Knights.
