ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's cross country team will play host to the Black Knights of Army Saturday at 11 a.m.
The Midshipmen have had a strong season thus far. Led by senior captain Justin Mikolay (Hudson, Ohio), Navy finished first in its first four meets. Mikolay himself is having a solid season, taking first place in the Navy Invitational Sept. 9 and a second-place showing at the Tennessee Invitational.
But Navy is not just a one-man team, however. The Mids have a good mix of old and young runners contributing each week. Veterans like senior Jonathan Hayes (Mt. Airy, Md.) and junior Colin Kennedy (Elkhorn, Wis.) have provided valuable leadership. Hayes is a consistent runner for the Mids. His best finish of the season came at the Navy Invitational Sept. 9, when he took third place. His best time came at the Paul Short Invitational, when he posted a time of 24:57.46. Kennedy got his season off to a strong start winning the Salisbury Open.
Sophomore Aaron Lanzel (Sugar Grove, Pa.) and freshman Erik Schmidt (Spokane, Wash.) have also been able to contribute. Lanzel has three top-10 finishes this season. His highest finish came at the Tennessee Invitational where he took fourth. Schmidt has gotten his career at Navy started off on the right foot. He has three top-10 finishes and took third in his first meet, the Salisbury Invitational.
This will be the 63rd meeting between the two schools, with Navy holding a 36-25-1 advantage in the series.
