Men’s Cross Country in Search of Fifth Straight PL Championship
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy men’s cross country team will be in action Saturday morning at the 2017 Patriot League Championship. Racing for the second time this season at Lehigh University’s Goodman Campus Cross Country Course, the Mids will look to finish atop the standings for the fifth consecutive season. The men’s championship race begins at 11 a.m. before the women compete for league supremacy at 12 p.m.
Unlike last year where four seniors recorded First-Team All-Patriot League nods in at the championship event, this year’s Midshipmen lineup will lean on three 2016 Second-Team All-Patriot League honorees. Amongst returning runners from the 2016 meet, Jake Brophy (ninth, 25:13.8), Kevin Murray (11th, 25:16.4) and Cory Donley (13th, 25:21.3) will lead the Mids this Saturday in Bethlehem. Gabriel Collison (29th, 25:51.0), Michael Karls (46th, 26:31.4) and Jacob Shewbert (65th, 27:21.7) also have experience, having run in last year’s conference championship.
Winners of four straight league titles, Navy has never finished lower than third place. In 13 of the previous 14 meets, Navy has either won or finished as the league’s runner up, tallying its lone third place finish in 2005.
Most recently, Navy competed in the 2017 Star Meet versus Army in Wappingers Falls, N.Y. on Oct. 14. Though the Mids took six of the top-10 finishes, the host Black Knights were able to garner the two-point victory, 27-29. Kevin Murray (2nd, 23:12.1) and Jake Brophy (3rd, 23:13.3) highlighted Navy’s effort in the head-to-head competition.
