CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Late Friday, the Patriot League announce its 2017 Men’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Academic All-Patriot League teams. Led by sophomore Kevin Murray’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year recognition, the Navy program was well represented on the all-league with a league-high three nods. Senior Josh Hanna and sophomore Jake Brophy joined Murray was members of the eight-man Academic All-Patriot League team.

The Corvias Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Academic All-Patriot League Teams honor student-athletes who excel in their sport and in the classroom. The awards are voted on by Patriot League cross country sports information directors, who could not select their own student-athletes.

Murray helped Navy to a second-place team finish at the Patriot League Championship by ranking fifth overall with a time of 24:25.25 to earn First Team All-League honors. During the 2017 cross country season, he was selected as the M-F Athletic Patriot League Runner of the Week on Sept. 12 and Oct. 2. In the classroom the sophomore mechanical engineering major carries a 3.89 grade point average (GPA). Murray recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA while carrying a 19-credit course load last spring and currently ranks 89th in the USNA Class of 2020 Overall Order of Merit. Murray was a 2016 Patriot League Cross Country Academic Honor Roll selection.

Murray became the sixth different Midshipmen to earn the honor of being voted the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He gives Navy its fourth straight Scholar-Athlete nod as Sam Peckham won in 2014 and 2015 before Ryan Speir was selected in 2016.

In addition to Murray, Navy added two more members to the academic all-League team, with Jake Brophy, a Second Team All-Patriot League honoree and senior Josh Hanna. Brophy finished in eighth-place at the League championship with a time of 24:26.10 and carries a 3.71 GPA in computer science. Hanna, a nuclear engineering major with a 3.90 GPA, has also been a three-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll pick.

This is the highest number of Mids named to the Academic All-Patriot League Team in the eight years that the team has been in existence. In 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2016, Navy had two honorees.

To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.

The Corvias Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each individual sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Corvias Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.

The Navy men's cross country team will continue postseason action next Friday, Nov. 10 with the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship in Bethlehem, Pa. The Mids will be racing for a spot in the 2017 NCAA Championship at Lehigh's Goodman Campus Cross Country Course beginning at 11:45 a.m.
