CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Navy senior Chris Galvin has been voted the Patriot League Men's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year, it was announced by the conference office on Wednesday. Galvin was also named to the Academic All-Patriot League Team along with sophomore John Sweeney.

Galvin is a mechanical engineering major with a cumulative GPA of 4.0. He has been named to both the Superintendant's and Commandant's Lists in all six semesters at the Naval Academy. The native of Austin, Texas, has been one of Navy's top-five finishers in six of seven meets this season. He was Navy's top finisher at both the Harry Lang Invitational and Notre Dame Invitational. At the Patriot League Championship on Oct. 27, Galvin placed eighth overall, earning second-team All-Patriot League honors.

Galvin is the first Midshipman to be named the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year since Bill Prom in 2008. He is one of three Mids to earn the award, joining Prom and John Kress (2007).

Sweeney is majoring in economics and currently sports a 3.31 GPA. He has earned a spot on the Superintendant's List once and twice been named to the Commandant's List. In competition this season, Sweeney has been in Navy's top four in all six races in which he has competed. The native of Euclid, Ohio, was Navy's top finisher in three races, including at the Patriot League Championship where he took sixth overall. In finishing sixth at the conference meet, Sweeney earned first-team All-Patriot League accolades.

This season marks the second consecutive year two Midshipmen have been voted to the Academic All-Patriot League Team as Cody Rome and James Pearson were both recognized last season. To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.

The Midshipmen will return to action on Friday at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship in University Park, Pa. The 10k race will begin at 1:15 p.m.
