Navy began the second half of the Patriot League season the same way it started the first half; the Mids opened Patriot League play with a 70-40 victory over Bucknell on Jan. 8 in Annapolis. This past Saturday, Navy recorded a 61-46 victory over the Bison in Lewisburg. Though Navy made just one more field goal in the game than Bucknell did (23-22), the Mids sank 12 three-point field goal attempts in the game and were 3-of-6 from the foul line while the Bison made just a pair of three-point field goals and did not convert a free throw attempt (0-of-6). Five different Mids made multiple three-pointers in the game, with Cassie Consedine (Jr., Bartlesville, Okla.) knocking down four treys on the night. She would finish the game with 15 points, nine rebounds and six blocked shots. Her latter total of rejections was one shy of tying her own school record. Leading Navy in both scoring and assists in the game was Angela Myers (Jr., San Antonio, Texas), who posted a line of 18 points, six assists and three steals. Joining the duo in double figures was K.C. Gordon (Sr., Vienna, Va.), who scored 12 points. The win improved Navy's overall record on the year to 12-11 and its Patriot League mark to 4-4. The Mids stand alone in third place in the Patriot League standings.
While the Mids were recording their win over the Bison, Lehigh was posting a 53-46 win over American in Bethlehem, Pa. The victory allowed the Mountain Hawks to pull into a first-place tie with the Eagles. Both teams have tallied a 7-1 record on the year, with each posting one win over the other. Among Lehigh's wins this year was a 64-56 victory over Navy in Stabler Arena. Navy's offense started slow that night as the Mids made just one field goal over the opening seven minutes of the game to quickly fall behind 16-3. The Mids were able to close to within three points late in the first half before Lehigh took a 35-27 lead at intermission. The Mids continued to chip away at the margin in the second half and soon pulled to within 51-48 and 54-50 late in the game. Lehigh would respond, however, with a 7-0 run to take a 61-50 lead with a little more than two minutes left on the clock. Lehigh as a team connected on 51.1 percent of its shots from the field in the game while holding Navy to a shooting percentage of 39.2 percent. The two teams combined for 17 three-point field goals in the game (9 for Navy). Though the Mids held a 33-24 edge on the glass, Navy also turned the ball over six more times than the Mountain Hawks did (20-14). Both teams saw three of their respective players score in double figures in the game. Pacing the Mids was Myers with 14 points and nine boards, while Erica Prosser and Emily Gratch both tallied 14 points for Lehigh. The win was the fifth in a row in the series for Lehigh and allowed the Mountain Hawks to take a 22-20 lead in the overall series with the Mids. Lehigh also holds a 19-17 lead over Navy in Patriot League regular season games played between the squads. Four of Lehigh's wins during its five-game winning streak against Navy have been decided by single digits, with three of the games decided by four points or less. The two teams have split the 18 Patriot League regular season games played between the squads in Annapolis, with the Mids holding an 11-9 lead in all games played on The Yard. The last two games played in Alumni Hall saw Lehigh win a 54-50 decision in 2008 and a 66-63 overtime game last year. |
