Women's Basketball to Host Army in Annual Trophy Game
Links associated with this release: GAME INFORMATION Navy will play host to Army in the annual Army-Navy Trophy Game, Saturday at 4 p.m. in Alumni Hall. The two teams are tied in the Patriot League standings with 3-6 marks. The Mids defeated the Black Knights, 72-61, Jan. 24 in West Point, N.Y. PROBABLE NAVY STARTERSHOLY CROSS 78, NAVY 77 OT (Feb. 14, Annapolis, Md.) An Adrienne Roseti 15-foot shot at the end of overtime rimmed out, denying Navy of an upset victory over Holy Cross, Wednesday night at Alumni Hall. Holy Cross shot 57.1-percent in the first half and jumped out to a 40-29 lead at intermission. The Navy deficit remained 11 points, 48-37, with 17 minutes to play in the game when Navy went on a 12-1 run to tie the game at 49-49 with 15:17 remaining in regulation. Courtney Davidson and Maile Shimoda alternated field goals and then three-point field goals, then Shimoda scored on a layup to knot the score. The Crusaders responded by opening up a six point lead, 60-54, with 7:36 remaining. Once again, Navy fought its way back, scoring 14 of the next 17 points to take a 68-63 lead with 1:32 left on the clock. The Crusaders forced overtime by scoring five-straight points. The Mids scored seven of the first nine points in the extra session and took a 75-70 lead with 1:29 remaining in the period. Navy held a 76-73 lead when Rothemich made a jumper for the Crusaders with 28 seconds remaining to cut the Navy lead to 76-75. Shimoda was fouled with nine seconds left and made one of two free throws to make the score 77-75. Following a timeout with six seconds to play, Rothemich hit a three-point field goal with 1.7 seconds left on the clock to give Holy Cross a 78-77 lead. After a Navy timeout, Bryanna Herring inbounded to Roseti who caught the ball at her own free throw line, spun to her left and put the shot up at the buzzer only to see her game-winning attempt rim out. ARMY PREVIEW The Black Knights have a Patriot League record of 3-6 this season, including a 1-4 record on the road. Therese Kelley leads the Black Knights in scoring during the league season with a 12.6 points per game average, and is second on the team in rebounding at 6.3 boards a game. Katie Macfarlane, who only played three minutes in the first game of the season against Navy, is second on team in scoring at 11.7 points per game and leads the Black Knights with 7.6 rebounds a game. As a team, Army is scoring 66.6 points per league game, while allowing 72.3 points per game. The Black Knights are narrowly being outrebounded, 36.3-34.8 rebounds a game. NAVY vs. ARMY PLAYER NOTES * Both Courtney Davidson and Adrienne Roseti scored 12 of Navy's final 31 points in the first meeting against Army. Davidson tied the Army-Navy record for most three-point field goals in a game with four and finished with 20 points, while Roseti recorded a double-double with a career-high 20 points and 13 rebounds. NAVY vs. ARMY SERIES HISTORY * The road team has won the last seven games in the series. The last time the home team won was Jan. 17, 1998, when Navy defeated Army, 74-46. * Both teams have won seven of the 14 games played in Annapolis, with Army winning the last two. ARMY-NAVY TROPHY The winner of Saturday's game will be awarded the Army-Navy Trophy, presented annually to the winner of a predetermined contest between the two academies. Navy is currently in possession of the Trophy by virtue of its 64-57 victory over the Black Knights last season. This will be the 12th Trophy Game, with each side claiming victory in six games. The two teams have split the six previous Trophy Games played in Annapolis, with Army winning the most recent in 1999. The Army-Navy Trophy was established in 1989 by Army donors Francis and Joe DeVitto. NAVY 72, ARMY 61 (Jan. 24, West Point, N.Y.) Navy controlled the final eight minutes of play on its way to a 72-61 victory over Army, Jan. 24 at Christl Arena in West Point, N.Y. Army shot 50-percent from the field and forced 17 Navy turnovers in building a 10-point first-half advantage over the Mids, but a Courtney Davidson three-point field goal with seven-seconds remaining in the half closed the gap to 30-26 at intermission. Navy was able to close to within two points several times in the second half, but Army responded by taking a 50-41 lead with 7:56 remaining in the game. With a pair of free throws from both Maile Shimoda and Kate Maslowski, as well as a pair of three-pointers from Davidson, Navy scored eight-straight points and trailed by just one point, 50-49, then tied the game at 51-51 on a layup from Ardienne Roseti. Later, Davidson's third three-pointer in a span of four minutes knotted the game at 56-56, then the Mids took their first lead since 10-8 when a basket by Roseti made the score 58-56 at the 3:16 mark. Roseti scored the next five Navy points on a pair of baskets and a free throw to give Navy a 63-57 advantage with 2:24 to play. Navy would make seven free throws in the final two minutes to seal their seventh-straight road victory over Army. Navy outscored Army over the final 7:36 of the game, 31-11, with freshmen scoring the final 34 points for Navy and Davidson and Roseti each accounting for a dozen of those points. Davidson finished the game with 21 points, while Roseti scored a career-high 20 points and added 13 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. SECOND-HALF TEAM Navy has proven to be a second-half team all season long. The Mids have scored more points in the second half of their games than the first half in 18 of 24 games this year, including 11 of the last 12 contests. Over the last 12 games, Navy has scored 341 first-half points (28.4 ppg) and 464 points in the second half (38.7 ppg). The Mids have scored 30 or more points in the first half in 10 games this season and in the second half in 19 games. Over the last 12 games, the Mids have scored at least 30 points in the first half of four games, while scoring 30 or more in the second half of all 12 games. 100-PLUS STRAIGHT GAMES WITH A THREE-POINTER Navy has made at least one three-point field goal in a school-record 105-consecutive games. The Midshipmen broke the previous school standard of 64, Jan. 12, 1999, at Bucknell. Navy has not been held without a three-point field goal made since Nov. 23, 1997, against Sacramento State. PLAYING OVERTIME Navy has played a trio of overtime games this season, losing at American (75-67, Nov. 29), defeating McNeese State (74-65, Dec. 20) and losing to Holy Cross, 78-77 (Feb. 14). The three overtime games matches the school record for most overtime games in a single season. Previously, Navy played three OT games during the 1984-85 and 1995-96 seasons. The Mids have posted a 10-7 rall-time ecord in overtime games. ROLLER COASTER SEASON It has been a season of brief ups and downs for the Navy basketball team. Navy has posted a winning streak of two games only once this season, while losing back-to-back games on five different occasions. Navy has a record of 1-8 in games following a win, as well as a record of 8-6 in games following a loss. The next-closest Mid in terms of career games played is junior Marisa Ball who has played in 77 games. Bombinski has made 58 career starts, 20 more than her closest teammate (sophomore Lisa Steinmetz, 38). Bombinski, who recorded her 600th career point at Yale (Jan. 15) enters today's game against Army just four points shy of 700 points. Bombinski recently notched her 400th career board (Feb. 3 at Bucknell) and has totaled 423 in her career. Over the last nine games, Bombinski has scored in double figures five times and is averaging 10.2 points and 6.0 rebounds per game (92 points, 54 rebounds). In addition, she has connected on multiple three-point field goals in five of the last nine games. Offensively this season Bombinski has scored in double figures in 11 games and has led the Mids in scoring in five games this season. She tied her career high of 21 points twice this season against McNeese State (Dec. 20) and Lafayette (Jan. 17). In addition, Bombinski is in fifth place in Navy history with 78 career three-point field goals made. Bombinski has increased her scoring and rebounding productions each year of her career. DAVIDSON CONTINUES STRONG PLAY Courtney Davidson has scored in double figures in 10 of the last 12 games and is averaging and 14.0 points per game during that span (168 points). Davidson has connected on a minimum of two three-point field goals in 11 of the last 12 games and has totaled 28 three-pointers in that span. She enters Saturday's game ranked fourth in the Patriot League in scoring with a 15.0-points-per-game average through nine league contests. She is third in the league with 2.33 three-pointers made per league game and is third with a .420 percentage. Davidson was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Jan. 22 after leading the Mids in scoring all three games that week and being the top rebounder in two of the three games, as well. She began the week by scoring 12 points at Yale, followed by a career-high 24-point, seven-rebound performance versus Lafayette, and ended the week by hitting four three-point field goals and scoring 14 second-half points on her way to 19 points and a career-high five assists at Holy Cross. For the week, Davidson averaged 18.3 points and 5.7 rebounds a game. She has scored in double figures in a team-high 15 games on the year and leads Navy in points (271) and is second three-point field goals made (39). She has led Navy in scoring in a team-high 10 games this year and is on pace to become just the second freshman in Navy history to lead the Mids in scoring (Colleen Cassidy, 1978-79). SHIMODA ON TEAR Maile Shimoda has scored in double figures in 11 games this season, including five of the last six She is averaging 15.2 points and 4.2 assists over the last six games (91 points, 24 assists), while making 53.1-percent of her three-point attempts during that span (17-32). She was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week this past Monday after averaging 16.0 points and 4.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists in Navy's two games. She scored 13 points and tied a career-high with five rebounds in Navy's win over Albany (Fen. 5), then drilled five three-point field goals on her way to a game-high 19 points at Lafayette (Feb. 11). For the week, Shimoda was 9 of 21 (.428) from the field, 7-14 (.500) from behind the three-point line and 7 of 9 from the free throw line (.778). Earlier in the season, Shimoda came off the bench to score 16 points and dish out a career-high seven assists against Colgate (Jan. 27), then, after totaling six first-half assists, scored 12 of her game-high 15 points in the second half of Navy's win at Lehigh (Jan. 31). She has recorded five or more assists in three of the last six games and in four games on the season. Shimoda has connected on a Navy-high 42 three-point field goals, and on the entire season, leads the Patriot League with .438 three-point field goal percentage and is the league leader with 2.75 three-point field goals made per league game. TROUBLE IN CLOSE GAMES Navy has had difficulty in close games over the past season and a half. Since the start of the 1999-00 season, the Midshipmen have posted marks of 0-4 in games decided by three points or less, 3-9 in games decided by six points or less and 8-17 in games determined by single digits. This season, Navy is 0-3 in games decided by three points or less, 1-6 in games decided by six points or less and 4-7 in games decided by nine points or less. MIDS CONNECTING ON LONG BALL Navy finished the 1999-00 Patriot League season by leading the league in three-point field goals made a game with a 4.83 average, marking the first time Navy has led the league in the statistic. This season the Mids are again on top of the league as Navy is averaging a league-best average of 8.33 three-point field goals per league game. Navy has made six or more three-pointers in 17 games this year, including 10 of the last 11. Three of the top-five three-point shooters in the Patriot League (league games only) are from Navy. Maile Shimoda ranks first in the league with 2.75 three-point field goals a game, Courtney Davidson is third with an average of 2.33, and Jennifer Bombinski is fifth with 1.67 made a game. Bombinski leads the league in three-point field goal percentage with a mark of .536, Shimoda is second at .489 and Davidson is third at .420. As a team, Navy has connected on a school record 152 three-point field goals this season, passing the old standard of 149 set during the 1991-92 season. Navy enters today's game just 10 three-pointers away from tying the Patriot League record of 162, set by Holy Cross five years ago. SPREADING THE MINUTES Eight players are averaging at least 10 minutes of playing time a game for Navy this season, with another five averaging over eight minutes a game. Navy has had at least eight players total 10 or more minutes in 16 games this season, with nine or more players playing at least 10 minutes in seven games. Jennifer Bombinski leads the Mids with 28.7-minutes played a game, the lowest team-leading average in Navy history. Since Navy began totaling minutes at the end of the season (1989-90), only once has Navy not had a player average at least 30 minutes a game (1999-00, Erica Hayes, 29.8). THREE MIDS NAMED ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Maile Shimoda was named the Patriot League's Rookie of the Week this past Monday, joining classmates Adrienne Roseti (Jan. 7) and Courtney Davidson (Jan. 22) as winners of the award this season. This is just the second time in Patriot League history one school has had three different players named rookie of the week in one season. Previously, Lafayette had three different players win the award during the 1990-91 season, the inaugural year of the league. DAVIDSON AND SHIMODA TOP FRESHMAN THREE-POINT LIST Courtney Davidson and Maile Shimoda have both surpassed the Navy record for most three-point field goals by a freshman. Shimoda has totaled a Navy-high 42 three-pointers this season, while Davidson is close behind her with 39. The previous school freshman standard was 30, set two seasons ago by Hilary Goodrich. In terms of three-point percentage, both players are not only at the top of the freshman list, they rank among the top-six shooters in Navy history. Both players also rank among the top three-point shooters in the Patriot League. Shimoda is second in the league with 2.00 three-point field goals made a game, while Davidson is third with a 1.62 average. In Patriot League games only, Shimoda leads the league with 2.75 three-pointers per game, while Davidson is third with an average of 2.33 per game. KATE MASLOWSKI Freshman Kate Maslowski has put together a string of strong games, recently. The Minnesota native has scored in double figures in three of the last seven games, including a career-high 15 points against Albany (Feb. 5). In addition, Maslowski recorded the first double-double of her career with 13 points and 10 rebounds in Navy's victory at Lehigh (Jan. 27). Maslowski is averaging 6.9 points and 3.6 rebounds, and is shooting 53.1-percent from the field over the last seven games. ROSETI ON ROLL Adrienne Roseti has been a big contributor to the team this season with both her scoring and her rebounding. Roseti has scored in double figures in seven of the last nine games, as well as in 10 of the last 14 and in 13 games on the year. She is averaging 13.9 points and 8.6 rebounds per game over the last nine games (125 points, 77 rebounds). Roseti recorded her team-high seventh double-double of the season with 12 points and 14 rebounds against Holy Cross (Feb. 14). She scored 12 of her career-high 20 points in the last five minutes of Navy's victory at Army (Jan. 24), including the go-ahead basket and the next five Navy points, as well. Roseti was named the Patriot League's Rookie of the Week on Jan. 7 after averaging 11 points and seven rebounds in Navy's victories that week over Air Force and Princeton. Earlier, she celebrated her return to her hometown by scoring a then career-best 18 points and 11 rebounds, Dec. 30 at Buffalo. She began the season by scoring 13 points and adding 12 rebounds against High Point (Nov. 20) to become just the fourth Navy freshman in to record a double-double in the first game of the year. Roseti has led Navy in scoring in three games and in rebounding in 14 games this season. Roseti has grabbed 10 or more rebounds in nine games this season, including a career-high 17 at American (Nov. 29). In addition, she is fourth in the Patriot League in rebounding with 7.9 rebounds per game and is second in the league in blocked shots (0.79 blocks per game). With a team-high 190 rebounds, Roseti is on pace to become just the second freshman in the last decade to lead Navy in rebounding (Becky Dowling, 1994-95). In addition, Roseti ranks second in Navy history for most blocks by a freshman with 19, just one away from the class record. SCORING DOWN THE STRETCH Courtney Davidson continues to hold onto her lead for most points scored in the last five minutes of games. Davidson has totaled 54 points at the end of games, 11 points ahead of Jennifer Bombinski and 14 in front of Adrienne Roseti. As for single-game performances, Adrienne Roseti set a new team-high with 12 points in the final five minutes against the Black Knights. Bombinski is second on the team with 11 points in the last five minutes of Navy's win over Columbia (Nov. 26), with Davidson scoring 10 points at American (Nov. 29). Davidson scored all of her points against the Eagles came in the final 33 seconds of regulation, then proceeded to score all six of Navy's points in overtime. Navy scored a season-high 21 points in the last five minutes against both American (Nov. 29) and at Army (Jan. 27), with a season-low four points at Buffalo (Dec. 30) and against Yale (Jan. 15). Navy allowed a season-high 17 points at Appalachian State (Dec. 3), as well as a season-low zero points against Air Force (Jan. 2). As a team, Navy has scored 269 points (11.2 ppg) in the last five minutes of games, while allowing 229 (9.5 ppg). Navy has outscored its opponents in the last five minutes of 13 games this season, scored fewer points in seven games and has scored an equal number of points four times. THE NAVY RESERVES Navy has received strong support from its bench all season. Navy's bench has outscored the opposing bench in 14 games on the year, is averaging 22.3 points per game and has accounted for 34.3-percent of Navy's scoring (536 of 1,562 points). Thirteen times this season a Mid has come off the bench to score at least 10 points in a game, most recently Bryanna Herring who scored 12 points against Albany (Feb. 5). As a group, the Navy Reserves have scored in double figures in every game but two and have totaled 20 or more points in 14 games on the season. The bench produced a season-high 43 points at Stetson (Dec. 10), as well as a season-low nine points at Army (Jan. 24). NAVY RALLIES Five times this season Navy has rallied from second-half deficit of at least 10 points to either tie the game or take the lead. Most recently, Navy rallied from an 11-point deficit to tie Holy Cross (Feb. 14).
