Colgate Cuts 25-Point Deficit With Late 33-6 Run to Upset Navy, 65-63, in Final Home Game of the Season
Links associated with this release: HAMILTON, N.Y. -- It was a classic come from behind win this evening at Cotterell Court as the Colgate women's basketball team used a late 33-6 tear to wipe away a 25-point deficit and capture a 65-63 victory against Navy. Sophomore Colleen McCaffrey scored 16 points and hauled down a game-high nine rebounds for the Red Raiders, while freshman Malissa Burke hit 2-of-4 from behind the arc and finished with 11 points. Sophomore Ali Hanson added 10 points, including a layup and a free throw in the last 20 seconds to secure the win for Colgate (5-21, 2-10). In her final game at Cotterell Court, senior Laura Rohrbacher tallied seven boards and three steals to complement four points on the night. Three players reached double figures for Navy (10-16, 4-7) as Courtney Davidson, Kate Maslowski, and Bryanna Herring chipped in 12 apiece. Adrienne Roseti took rebounding honors for the Mids with six boards in the contest. Navy came out strong and stunned the Red Raiders with a 9-0 run in the first four minutes of the game. Colgate struggled with 29 percent shooting in the first half, while Navy made 64 percent of its attempts from the field, and the Mids headed into the break with a 42-26 advantage. Navy increased its lead to 25 points in the second half and Colgate trailed 57-32 at 13:05, but the Red Raiders stepped up to the challenge at hand. Freshman Vicky Briscoe began the Colgate scoring drive with a jumper at 12:47. The Red Raiders pushed their offensive game and Burke eventually brought Colgate within four, 60-56, on a bank three-pointer at the 3:41 mark. Burke and McCaffrey then each hit a pair of free throws to chip away at the Navy lead and tie the game at 60 with just over two minutes to go. Colgate took its first lead of the contest on a free throw by Sarah Parks with 43 seconds remaining. Davidson kept the Mids alive with two makes at the line, tying the score at 62, but Hanson turned it on for Colgate, scoring three of her ten points in the last 20 seconds. The Red Raiders finished with a 33-6 run down the stretch to post the come back victory.
