Navy qualified for the rite of spring entitled March Madness by winning the championship game of the Patriot League Tournament over Holy Cross Saturday in Alumni Hall. The Mids overcame a seven-point halftime deficit to defeat the Crusaders, 57-48.
The Mids made their inaugural foray into the NCAA Tournament last season a memorable one. Navy, seeded 14th, led third-seeded DePaul in the second half and the Mids were still within striking distance of the eventual Sweet 16-bound Blue Demons until the waning moments of what would end up being a 56-43 loss.
This season, Navy garnered the No. 15 seed in the region, while Maryland, 28-4 on the year and winners of the recent Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament, is seeded second.
Though separated by just a short drive, the two programs have never before faced each other. Additionally, this will be just the fourth game for Navy against an ACC program and the first in two decades. Conversely, the Terrapins have already defeated Patriot League-member schools American and Lafayette this season.
