Navy Women's Basketball NCAA Tournament Diary
March 16, 2011
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- A member of the Patriot League champion-Navy women's basketball team will chronicle their thoughts for NavySports.com throughout the NCAA Tournament. Sophomore guard Chey Arvin writes Wednesday's entry.
After the Tournament Selection party on Monday night, most of us went back to Bancroft Hall to prepare for practice the next day. Tuesday's practice included a different kind of competition altogether. Each year we hold an Olympiad. The team splits into three squads and competes to win events, some drills that we do in practice, and others are things like pushups and half court-shots. Each squad gets points for winning a competition. The coaches also award points to the team that is most spirited, has the best poster, and has the best costumes. It represents our competitive spirit, but also our ability to juggle work with play. The winner of this year's Olympiad was `The Power Rangers' with Audrey Bauer, Cassie Consedine, Veronica Ffrench, and Kara Pollinger. That night, all of us reunited as a whole team again to go to the mall and the movies.
Even though it has been five days since we won the Patriot League Championship, the team is still pumped up. We're trying to harness that excitement and energy and funnel it towards playing DePaul. At the start of today's practice, we huddled up and talked about the things we have to do to win on Saturday. Cassie said that even though winning the Patriot League was an important part of NWB history, it is important that we don't settle for JUST making the NCAA Tournament. Tomorrow we leave for Pennsylvania, where we will spend our last days of preparation before the game. Getting away from the Academy will solidify the fact that the Patriot League Tournament is in the past, and the NCAA's is our future!
