Pair of Mids Earn League Academic Honor for Women's Basketball
June 21, 2012
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- Navy's 2011-12 team captain Erin Edwards (Hockessin, Del.) and rising senior Jen Penley (Pfafftown, N.C.) were among the 50 women's basketball players who were named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll for the sport this week.
A minimum 3.20 grade-point average for the 2012 spring semester was required to earn placement onto the honor roll.
Edwards graduated from Navy in May with a degree in English after posting a 3.24 GPA for her final semester on The Yard. Now an Ensign in the Navy, Edwards will soon begin training to become a pilot. She missed three games early in the 2011-12 season due to a concussion, but still scored a personal-best 188 points on the year. Edwards led the Patriot League in three-point field goal percentage with her mark of 40.2 percent and ranked eighth in the league with an average of 1.3 three-point field goals made a game. She scored a career-high 15 points in Navy's regular season finale against Bucknell, a win that served as a springboard to a run that culminated with the Mids winning the program's second consecutive Patriot League Tournament title and making their second NCAA Tournament appearance in as many years.
Penley accrued a 3.41 GPA during the spring term to also garner Commandant's and Dean's Lists accolades for the grading period. The ocean engineering major appeared in 15 games during the 2011-12 campaign and set career highs in every statistical category this year including points (25) and rebounds (17).
