Complete 2017-18 Schedule
The Mids return three starters and six (of nine) letterwinners from last year’s team that posted an overall record of 24-10, placed second in the Patriot League regular season with a 14-4 record, advanced to the championship game of the league tournament and won the program’s first national post-season tournament game when it defeated George Washington in the opening round of the WNIT.
The Mids will face the Red Foxes from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (15-17 a year ago) in the season opener for both teams. Navy will then play each of its next seven games in Alumni Hall, a stretch that begins with a Nov. 12 game against Marist’s fellow MAAC-member Rider (23-10 in 2016-17). The Broncs lost in the first round of the 2017 WNIT to Virginia Tech, the team that went on to defeat Navy in the second round of the tournament.
Navy will play two more games prior to Thanksgiving –– Nov. 17 vs. Norfolk State (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, 15-15), Nov. 22 vs. Air Force (Mountain West Conference, 4-25) –– before playing host to the annual Navy Classic over the holiday weekend. Navy’s first game in the event will be a Nov. 25 contest against North Dakota State (Summit League, 6-24), then it will face either UMBC (America East, 15-16) or St. Bonaventure (Atlantic 10, 9-20) the following day.
The non-conference home slate concludes with games Nov. 30 against Monmouth (Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, 15-16) and Dec. 3 against Emory & Henry (NCAA Division III, 19-8).
A trio of road games will cap the pre-season schedule for the Mids. This span starts with a Dec. 6 game at Richmond (Atlantic 10, 13-17), continues with a Dec. 10 game at New Mexico (Mountain West, 15-15) in a homecoming game for Hannah Fenske (Sr., Albuquerque, N.M.) and concludes Dec. 20 at LIU Brooklyn (Northeast Conference, 6-23).
Of those dozen teams, the lone one Navy faced during the 2016-17 season was Air Force. The Mids posted a 64-46 victory over the Falcons in Colorado Springs. Navy has played four of those teams during the nine-year Stefanie Pemper era: Rider (last: 2013-14), UMBC (2011-12), Richmond (2012-13) and Long Island (2015-16). Additionally, the Mids last played Marist during the 2001-02 season and both St. Bonaventure and Monmouth during the 2005-06 campaign.
This year will mark the first time Navy will be playing Norfolk State, North Dakota State, Emory & Henry and New Mexico.
Navy will close the 2017 calendar and open the 2018 Patriot League season Dec. 29 when the Mids play host to Loyola. Consecutive road games at Lehigh (Jan. 2) and American (Jan. 5) follow before Colgate travels to Annapolis on Jan. 8. Navy will then play at Holy Cross on Jan. 11 and play host to Army West Point in the non-Star Game between the teams on Jan. 14. Navy’s brief two-game homestand comes to a close on Jan. 17 against Lafayette.
The Mids are scheduled to play three of their next four games on the road, starting with games at Boston (Jan. 20) and Bucknell (Jan. 24). The second half of the league season begins at home on Jan. 27 against Lehigh, with the Mids then heading back out of town for a Feb. 3 game at Colgate. Navy will have another brief stay at home when it plays host to Holy Cross on Feb. 7. Road games at Army (Feb. 10) and Lafayette (Feb. 17) follow.
Navy will remain in the Annapolis area for each of its final four games of the regular season. The Mids play host to Boston on Feb. 17 and Bucknell on Feb. 21, play at Loyola on Feb. 24 and close the regular season Feb. 28 at home against American.
The first round games in the Patriot League Tournament (No. 10 at No. 7, No. 9 at No. 8) will be played at the higher-seeded team in each game on March 3. The two winning teams from that round will then advance to the quarterfinals where the top-six seeds will also be in action. The two semifinal games will be played March 8 and the title tilt will be contested March 11. Just as in the first round, each of the four quarterfinal round games, the two semifinal round games and the championship game will be contested at the home of higher-seeded team playing in each game.
