Navy Women's Basketball Team Tabbed as League Favorite
Oct. 25, 2012
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- The two-time defending Patriot League Tournament-champion Navy women's basketball team was selected by the league's coaches and sports information contacts to win a third-consecutive title this year. Additionally, Navy's Jade Geif (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.) was named as the pre-season player of the year in the league. The announcement of the pre-season poll and all-league team was made Thursday by the league office.
Only once before has Navy placed first in the league's pre-season poll, and that was prior to the start of the 1996-97 season when the results of the voting by the coaches (Navy was first) and sports information contacts (Navy was second) were split into two different polls. There has been a combined poll between the two constituencies since the 2000-01 season.
Navy was picked to place third in the 2010-11 and 2011-12 pre-season polls.
Half of the eight-team league received at least one first-place vote in this year's balloting. The Mids, who received the No. 3 seed in last year's tournament, garnered half of the 16 first-place votes (representatives from schools were not allowed to vote for their own team) and accrued 89 points in all to lead the league in both categories. Navy edged American, a team that shared the 2011 regular season crown with Navy and Lehigh before losing in the tournament final in Annapolis and then won the 2012 regular season title with a 14-0 league record, by two first-place votes and four points overall.
Placing third in the voting was Holy Cross with one first-place vote and 70 total points. The Crusaders were the No. 5 seed in the 2012 tournament, but went on the road to knock off both fourth-seeded Army and the top-seeded Eagles before falling to Navy in the championship game in Alumni Hall. Army received the lone remaining first-place vote in the league and finished in fourth place in the tabulation with 66 points in all.
Lehigh, the No. 2 seed in last year's tournament and which Navy defeated in the semifinal round of the event, received 58 points to place fifth in the voting. Lafayette finished in sixth place with 30 points while Bucknell and Colgate both garnered 25 points to tie for seventh place. Lafayette was the No. 8 seed in last year's tournament, Bucknell was the No. 7 seed and Colgate was the No. 6 seed.
Geif also was picked as the pre-season player of the year prior to the start of the 2011-12 campaign. Last year as a sophomore, the 2010-11 league rookie of the year improved upon nearly all of the statistics she previously compiled as a freshman -- including points, field goal percentage, assists, blocks and steals -- on her way to earning 2012 second-team all-league accolades. Geif additionally was tabbed as the Most Valuable Player of the 2011 and 2012 Patriot League Tournaments.
Joining Geif on the 2012-13 pre-season all-league team were American's Alexis Dobbs, Army's Anna Simmers and both Alex Smith and Amy Lepley from Holy Cross.
Navy will open its 2012-13 season with road games on Nov. 9 at Iona and Nov. 11 at Stony Brook. The Mids will then open the home portion of their season by playing host to St. Peter's on Nov. 17.
