Links associated with this release: CAMDEN, N.J. -- The Navy women's crew team continued its strong early season by winning the Knecht Cup, Saturday on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J. The Mids posted victories in the first and second varsity races, as well as in the second novice competition. Navy's first varsity boat won its qualifying heat, but did not record the fastest time in the preliminaries. The Mids were six seconds slower than Boston College and two seconds behind Delaware. The final quickly became a race between Navy and Boston College as both teams raced out to large advantages over the rest of the field. Navy took a slim lead over the Eagles in the second 500 meters of the race, a lead that quickly evaporated. The Mids again took a narrow advantage over Boston College as the two teams entered the final 500 meters, but this time the Mids would hold the lead and cross the finish line two seconds ahead of the Eagles. Navy's second varsity boat remained undefeated on the season by winning its race by 14 seconds over its closest competitor, Boston College. The Mids completed the course in a time of 7:16. Navy's second novice entry also won its race, finishing in a time of 7:40.9, six seconds ahead of second-place Villanova. Navy also saw its first novice boat make the finals of the Knecht Cup, but came in third place behind Lehigh (7:22) and Boston College (7:33). The Mids crossed the finish line in a time of 7:37. Head coach Mike Hughes was pleased with the progress his first varsity eight boat has made since its first race just two weeks ago. "It is great to see a crew mature as this boat has done all season. They really needed the win today and they went out and got it in a very tough race."
