Women's Crew Has Success on Both Coasts

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy women's crew team enjoyed a strong day of racing on both coasts as the team sent crews to the San Diego Crew Classic and to the Playfair Cup in Washington, D.C.
Navy's first varsity boat placed second in its heat at the San Diego Crew Classic to advance to Sunday's grand final. The Mids recorded a time of 6:56.28 over the 2,000-meter course, trailing only heat-winner Loyola Marymount by four seconds (6:52.05). Navy finished over four seconds ahead of third-place finisher St. Joseph's (7:00.67).
"It was a great race under almost ideal racing conditions on Mission Bay," said Navy women's head coach Mike Hughes. "We were pretty comfortably in second place for most of the race, which is where we wanted to be since the top-two boats automatically advance to the grand final."
The remainder of the team competed in the Playfair Cup on the Potomac River in our nation's capitol. In the premier event of the day for the Mids, Navy won the second varsity eight race by nearly three seconds over Boston University and seven seconds in front of George Washington. The Mids also placed second in the varsity four race, first and second in a pair of first novice races and second in the lone second novice race.
"It was a great day of racing," said Navy women's assistant coach Nicky Stimpson. "We had great rows from everyone on the team."
Navy's entire team will be in action next Saturday as Navy takes part in the George Washington Invitational.
