Navy Places Fifth at San Diego Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Navy women's crew team placed fifth in the grand final of the San Diego Crew Classic, held Sunday afternoon on Mission Bay in San Diego.

The Mids recorded a time of 7:24.35 in the race and were narrowly edged for fourth place by Clemson's time of 7:22.89. Loyola Marymount, who recorded the fastest time in Saturday's preliminary heats, won Sunday's grand final with a time of 7:12.70.

"We had a poor start to the race and we were in a difficult lane, one that didn't shield the crosswind that three of the other lanes had the luxury of," said Navy women's head coach Mike Hughes. "But those are obstacles which you have to overcome. You just have to be a superior crew and today we were not.

"I am very proud of first, advancing to the grand final, but also with how tough we rowed today. I was very impressed with how we were able to make moves throughout the race and how we never gave up. We almost caught Clemson at the finish, despite trailing them the entire race."

The entire Navy women's crew team will be in action Saturday as the Mids take part in the George Washington Invitational on the Potomac River.
