Women's Crew Competes at Boston University
Links associated with this release: BOSTON, Mass. - Navy's women's crew team placed third in the first varsity race at the Playfair Cup, held Saturday on the Charles River in Boston, Mass. It was a tight first half of the race as Navy, Iowa, Boston University and George Washington all were bunched together through the opening 1000 meters of the race. Once the boats reached the midway point in the race, the one race quickly turned into two races: a race for first between Iowa and Boston, and a race for third between Navy and George Washington. The Hawkeyes, ranked 15th in the latest national poll, prevailed over the Terriers, ranked 11th, by a nearly one and one-half seconds, with Navy coming in third place, another nine seconds behind Iowa. The Mids were able to hold off the Colonials by just under two seconds. "I was a little disappointed in how far back we were from the leaders," said Navy head coach Mike Hughes. "But our boat has matured each week of the season and I feel it will continue to do so throughout the remainder of the year ." Navy's second varsity boat improved to 13-0 this season with a narrow victory over the Terriers. After a shaky start to the race, the Mids made a final push in the last 500 meters of the race to win by one second and less than a third of a boat length. The Mids also were involved in a close race in the varsity four contest, but this time BU emerged with a victory by nine-tenths of a second over the Navy entry. Navy will be back in action this coming Saturday when Navy competes at the George Washington Invitational First Varsity
