Two Navy Crew Teams to Race Saturday on the Potomac River

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy's heavyweight and women's crew teams will take part in Saturday's George Washington Invitational on the Potomac River, while the lightweight team will return to New Jersey for the second-straight week to face Rutgers and Columbia.

The Midshipmen have traditionally posted strong results at the G.W. Invite, with the two programs combining to win the overall team title in both 2002 and '03 and seven times in the 16 years of the event.

"We will face some very strong crews again this weekend," said Navy women's coach Mike Hughes. "USC, Iowa and Tennessee are just a few of the nationally-ranked teams we will be challenging. Facing talented crews such as these three schools is the only way to make us better, I believe. We are going to go after them with everything we have and see what happens."

"The strongest crews in our field appear to be Temple, Virginia, Marietta and both Washington D.C. schools; George Washington and Georgetown," said Navy heavyweight head coach Rick Clothier.

Last weekend saw Navy's first varsity women's team place fifth in the Cal Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic, while the remainder of the team won the second varsity and one of the two first novice races at the Playfair Cup in Washington, D.C. Additionally, Navy's heavyweight team swept four races from MIT and Columbia, with the lightweight team coming one victory short of sweeping five races from Yale.
