Women's Crew Places Third

The Navy women's crew team finished in third place in the first varsity grand final of the George Washington Invitational, Saturday on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C.

The Mids advanced to the grand final by winning its heat with a time of 5:48.6. In the final, Navy, Virginia and Columbia all battled each other for more than half of the race. With about 800 meters left in the 2000-meter course, Navy was one seat behind Columbia and an equal distance ahead of Virginia. The Cavaliers and the Lions sprinted to the finish line to finish ahead of the Navy entry. Virginia, ranked among the top-10 teams in the nation, won the race with a time of 5:47.7, with Columbia second at 5:48.09 and the Mids third at 5:55.19. Navy, which defeated George Washington by just two seconds last week, finished 15 seconds ahead of the Colonials on Saturday.

In the second varsity event, the Mids won their heat but suffered its first loss of the season in the grand final. Navy, which entered the final with a 13-0 record, finished nine seconds behind Virginia. The Cavaliers crossed the finish line with a winning time of 5:55.3, while Navy was second with a time of 6:04.24. The Mids finished ahead of Massachusetts (6:05.35) and New Hampshire (6:24.00).

Navy's varsity four boat also advanced to the grand final, placing fourth with a time of 6:54. Navy's first novice boat narrowly won the petite final, defeating Temple by three-tenths of a second.

"We held our own today against some tough teams," said Navy head coach Mike Hughes. "Our boats are going faster each week so I am encouraged that we are going in the right direction."

Navy will race Saturday at Columbia against Northeastern and the host Lions.
