Women's Crew Wins Pair of Races at Boston

BOSTON, Mass. -- The Navy women's crew team had a good day of racing on the Charles River in Boston, picking up a pair of victories in five races over Columbia and Northeastern.
Navy's day was highlighted by a 10-second victory in the second varsity race. The Mids crossed the 2,000-meter course in 7:04.6, with Columbia second at 7:14.0 and Northeastern at 7:14.2.
"Spectacular," was how Navy women's head coach Mike Hughes described the efforts of his second varsity team. "They took the lead right from the start and never let up. It was an impressive showing."
The Mids placed third in the marquee event of the day, the first varsity race. Northeastern narrowly edged Columbia by two-tenths of a second to win the race, with the Mids finishing seven seconds in back of the lead boat.
"We didn't start real well in the race," said Hughes. "It wasn't a bad start, but it wasn't what we needed. As a result we were soon down by about one-third of a boat length. We competed well during the remainder of the race and didn't lose much water, but the start was too much for us to overcome."
Navy's second victory of the day came in the second novice race as the Mids posted an eight-second win over Northeastern. In the remaining races, Navy finished six seconds in back of Northeastern in the first novice race, as well as three seconds behind Columbia in the varsity four race.
"Overall it was a good day for us," summarized Hughes. "We have something to build on and I feel we are in good shape to do well next weekend."
Navy will next compete April 25 in Worcester, Mass., in the Patriot League Challenge.
