Crew Teams to race in Three Meets
Each of the three Navy crew programs will be in competition Saturday in races throughout the East Coast.
Navy's heavyweight team, which last weekend swept all of the finals at the George Washington Crew Classic, will compete for the Goes Trophy in Syracuse, N.Y., against both the host Orangemen and Cornell. The winner of the first varsity race is awarded the Goes Trophy, with the Stagg Trophy for total team points in the regatta being awarded, as well. The Mids last won both trophies in the 2000 season. Last season, Navy posted second-place finishes in the first and second varsity races, while winning both novice races.
Navy's women's team will race in Orchard Beach, N.Y., against Northeastern, Columbia and Massachusetts. Northeastern and Columbia are both EAWRC teams who Navy will see in a few weeks at the conference championship. In the 2002 race between these schools, Navy placed third in the first varsity race and second in both novice races.
The lightweight team will also return to competition this week, with the Haines Cup on the line for the winner of the Navy vs. Harvard race on the Charles River in Cambridge, Mass. Navy swept each of the four races from the Crimson last year.
