ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy's lightweight and women's crew teams will play host to a series of races Saturday morning on the Severn River. The lightweight team will face Pennsylvania, while the women's team will challenge MIT. Racing begins at 6:30 a.m.

This will be the last weekend of competition for all three of Navy's teams prior to the Eastern Sprint Championship on May 13.

The lightweight crew team is coming off a four-race sweep over MIT, last Sunday on the Charles River. Navy's first varsity boat is ranked seventh in the latest Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges Coaches Poll, while Pennsylvania is ranked 10th. Navy's second varsity boat is ranked fifth, it's third varsity and first novice boats are ranked fourth, and the second novice team is the top-ranked boat in the EARC.

"I expect a close race on Saturday," said Navy head coach Dale Hurley. "Navy and Penn have had a great rivalry over the past few years and Saturday should be no exception."

Navy's women's team had a number of close races last Saturday in New York against Columbia, Northeastern and Massachusetts. The Mids placed first in a pair of races and had one second place and two third-place showings. The Mids are ranked 14th in the first varsity poll and ninth in the second varsity rankings.

"It is important for us to continue improving our times as we aim towards the Eastern Sprints in two weeks," said Navy head coach Mike Hughes.

Navy's heavyweight team also will be in action on Saturday. The Mids will challenge Harvard and Pennsylvania in Cambridge, Mass. The Adams Cup - one of the oldest trophies in collegiate rowing - will be awarded to the winner of the first varsity race between the trio of schools.

The Mids are ranked 11th in both the first and second varsity rankings, Harvard is ranked among the top-three teams in both polls, and Pennsylvania is ranked fifth in both boats.

"Harvard is the best team we will race this season, and Penn is very good, too," said Navy head coach Rick Clothier. "The Adams Cup is always a close and exciting race."
