Complete Eastern Sprints Championship Schedule

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's crew team will compete at the Eastern Sprints Championship this Sunday on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J. The heats will begin at 8:20 a.m., with the finals starting at 1:50 p.m.

Navy's first varsity boat comes into the race seeded 12th among the field of teams. During its heat at 8:40 a.m., the Mids will take to the water against top-seeded Brown, No. 6 Northeastern, No. 7 Boston University, No. 13 Rhode Island and No. 18 George Washington. The top-two teams in the heat will advance to the grand final, while the next-two boats will compete in the petite final and the final-two squads will participate in the third-level final.

The results of that heat will also determine the winner of the Playfair Trophy - which is presented to the winner of the first varsity race between Navy, Boston University and George Washington. The trio of squads was originally scheduled to compete for the trophy on the Cooper River on April 4, but dangerous winds caused the event to be cancelled. The Mids are looking to win their second Playfair Trophy in three years, as Boston University won the race in 2008.

In addition to the first varsity crew, five other Navy boats will partake in the action on Sunday - 12th-seeded second varsity, ninth-seeded first novice, sixth-seeded varsity four `A', fifth-seeded varsity four `B' and seventh-seeded second novice.

Last season, the Midshipmen placed 12th in the Charles Willing Jr. Trophy standings - which is presented to the team with the highest team score in the varsity and novice events. The Mids won the third-level final of the first varsity race to finish 13th overall, while the second varsity, varsity four `A', varsity four `B' and first novice all competed in the petite finals. The second novice boat produced the highest finish for the Mids last spring with a second-place time in the grand final.

Navy's first varsity boat has advanced to the petite finals three times over the last-five years. The Midshipmen have placed among the top-12 teams in the Charles Willing Jr. Trophy Jr. standings in each of the last-five years.
