Five Mids Receive CRCA Scholar-Athlete Honor


ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Five members of the Navy women's crew team have been selected as National Scholar-Athletes by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association, it was announced Monday by the CRCA.

Receiving the honor for Navy are Heather Ichord ((Jr., Vienna, Va.), Kacie Inman (Sr., Fredericksburg, Va.), Kathleen Mortenson (So., Arlington, Va.), Margaret Sweeny (Sr., Grosse Point Farms, Mich.) and Shaunnah Wark (Jr., Exeter, N.H.).

A total of 24 student-athletes in the Mid-Atlantic Region and 129 from across the country garnered the accolade. To be eligible, a student-athlete must be of at least sophomore standing with a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade-point average through the fall semester of the school year and participate in at least 75-percent of the season's races in the varsity boat.

Academically for the Navy quintet, Inman carries a 3.64 grade-point average as a political science major, Ichord maintains a 3.66 GPA in ocean engineering, Mortenson has a 3.66 GPA in mechanical engineering, Sweeny is a oceanography major with a 3.56 GPA and Wark is a systems engineering major and carries a 3.73 GPA. This is the second-straight year Inman has been named to the scholar-athlete team, while each of her teammates are making their first appearances on the team.

Some of the athletic accomplishments by the varsity boat this year include ranking sixth in the Mid-Atlantic Region and winning titles at the Murphy Cup, the Patriot League Challenge, the Navy Day Regatta and the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta.
