Stimpson Garners Coaching Honor

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Navy women's crew coach Nicky Stimpson has been selected as a Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Regional Assistant Coach of the Year, it was announced this week by the organization. Stimpson garnered the accolade for the Mid-Atlantic Region.

The award is designed to honor a CRCA assistant coach who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to their program, has had a significant impact on the success of their program, and who has demonstrated a high level of professionalism and integrity as a coach.

"Nicky is very deserving of this honor," said Navy women's head coach Mike Hughes. "She has done a great job with this team, from being a great recruiter to her coaching ability to her tremendous can-do attitude and work ethic."

Stimpson recently completed her second season as Navy's assistant varsity and head novice coach. Both of her crews won titles at the 2004 Patriot League Challenge -- posting a combined 48-second margin of victory -- while her first novice team placed ninth and her second novice boat placed fourth at the Eastern Sprints.

"Her two boats had wonderful seasons, made even more successful when you consider we moved five of her top freshmen into varsity boats during the spring season," said Hughes. "Despite that added obstacle, her first novice team recorded its highest finish at the Eastern Sprints and her second novice boat posted the highest eight-oared boat finish at the Sprints in Navy history."

Stimpson joins the other regional winners -- Emily Ford, Michigan (Central); Shelagh Donohoe, Northeastern (New England), Kelly Lynch, Clemson (South) and Sara Nevin, California (West) -- as candidates for the national assistant coach-of-the-year award.
