March 13, 2014
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Navy sophomore Renata Bucher shot a career-best 158 (78-80) to place second individually at the Bulldog Florida Invitational at the Windsor Parke Golf Club on Tuesday and Wednesday. Bucher led Navy to a seventh-place finish at the nine-team field with a team score of 716 (371-345).
"This was a good way to start the semester," head coach Nadia Ste-Marie said. "We played poorly on the first day so it was great to see us move forward and have a nice round today. It was also very exciting to watch Renata finish so high. She played really well and put together two great rounds down here."
IPFW won the team title with a 659 and was followed by Chicago State (666), Youngstown State (671) and Western Illinois (673). IPFW's Brenna Sherwood won the individual title with a 12-over par 156 (80-76), which was two strokes better than Bucher.
After shooting a 371 on Tuesday, Navy entered Wednesday in eighth place ahead of only Savannah State, but rebounded to shoot a 345 on Wednesday to finish ahead of both Eastern Illinois (722) and Savannah State (805). Navy's 345 on Tuesday is the lowest round in its brief history as a Division I program.
Bucher's second-place score of 158 (78-80) was seven strokes better than her previous career best and she was followed by senior Grace Dalton, who placed 33rd with a 181 (100-81). After being sick on Tuesday, Dalton recovered to lower Wednesday's round by an impressive 19 strokes for a career-best 9-over par 81.
Freshman Katie Ryall placed 42nd at 189 (99-90), while freshman Marci Browning was 44th (99-94=193) and sophomore Melia Lagat was 49th (95-104=199).
Bucher's second-place finish (14-over par) came in a field of 54 total golfers. Bucher shared the tournament lead with her five birdies and she also made 19 pars.
Navy will next compete at William & Mary's Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate at Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, Va. from Sunday to Tuesday. The Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate will be played at the River Course, which is home to the LPGA's Kingsmill Championship (May 15-18).
Navy will compete in the 13-team field against Fairleigh Dickinson, Hofstra, IUPUI, Lehigh, Longwood, Monmouth, Radford, Sacred Heart, Saint Francis U, William & Mary and Yale (A and B).
