WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The Navy women's golf team competed in its inaugural round on Sunday afternoon in a chilly opening round of the 54-hole C&F Bank Intercollegiate held at the Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, Va.
The Midshipmen opened their season with a 67-over par score of 351 to land in 26th place out of 28 teams after round one. Boston College leads the tournament with an 18-over score of 302, while Longwood is second at 22-over par (306). Patriot League member Lehigh is tied for 13th at 37-over par (321).
The Midshipmen were five strokes better than Monmouth (72-over par) and 28 strokes better than Randolph-Macon College (95-over par).
Delaware's Annie Bowlsby and Longwood's Hannah Pierce share the tournament lead after round one with a 2-over par 73. In all, 43 players broke 80 on the first day on the challenging par-71 layout.
Freshmen Renata Bucher (Colorado Springs, Colo.) led the Midshipmen with a 10-over par 81 (40-41) to land in a tie for 54th place. Senior captain Catherine Reed (Tipp City, Ohio) followed with a 16-over par 87 (44-43).
Senior Natalie Crow (San Jose, Calif.) and junior Grace Dalton (Malvern, Pa.) rounded out Navy's counting scores with a 90 (46-44) and 93 (42-51), respectively. Dalton recorded the first birdie in school history with a two on the par-3 17th hole.
Melia-Mae Lagat (Bremerton, Wash.) tallied a 99 (54-45) at the No. 5 slot for the Midshipmen.
The Midshipmen will tee off on Monday morning in round two off hole No. 1, beginning at 7:45 AM (ET).
