Walker Places Fourth at the Navy Spring Invitational
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy junior Christine Walker tied for fourth place individually with a 157 (81-76; +13) on Saturday and Sunday at the Navy Spring Invitational at the par 72, 6,085-yard Naval Academy Golf Club. Walker helped Navy take sixth place in the 12-team field with a 36-hole score of 659 (331-328; +83).
"The tournament kind of grew in the last minute," said Navy head coach Nadia Ste-Marie. "Hartford had a tournament scheduled this weekend as well, but had bad weather. So we were fortunate to collect Harvard, Dartmouth and Saint Francis. Initially we had nine teams and we went to 12 overnight.
"It was a great field. The weather was windy, but overall for the spring it has been wonderful. So it turned out to beautiful. We had some great competition. The course was playing tough with the wind and faster greens than most players are accustomed to. So the scores may have been a bit higher than normal, but overall it was a good tournament."
Harvard won team title with a two-round score of 620 (310-310; +44). Lehigh was second with a 639 (316-323; +63) and Dartmouth was third (331-310=641; +65). Fairleigh Dickinson finished in fourth place with a 648 and was followed by Youngstown State in fifth (650) and Navy in sixth (659).
"Our scores were a bit higher than what we've had all year, so that was a bit disappointing," said Ste-Marie. "We had a couple of players playing as individuals who had some nice rounds and Christine finished with a really nice round today of 76 that put her in a tie for fourth place."
Harvard's Michelle Xie and Anna Zhou were co-medalists, each carding 152s (+8) in the 66-player field. Youngstown State's Reva Morris was third with a 153 (+9), while Walker tied for fourth place with Dartmouth's Jessica Kittelberger.
Competing individually, Navy junior Mary Kate Nelson tied for 23rd place with a 165 (85-8-; +21) and freshman Micah Vincent tied for 28th place with a 167 (85-82; +23). Navy's lone senior Marci Browning placed 56th with a 182 (90-92; +38) in the final home tournament of her career.
Navy will next compete at the 2017 Patriot League Championship at Lehigh's Saucon Valley Country Club from April 22-23.
