Bucher Earns Medalist Honors at the Navy Spring Classic
April 14, 2014
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy sophomore Renata Bucher shot an overall score of 242 (77-82-83; +26) to win the individual title at the Navy Spring Classic. The four-team tournament was contested at the Naval Academy Golf Club from Sunday to Monday on a par-72, 6,005-yard course.
Bucher earned medalist honors at a tournament for the first time in her career and the 242 is the lowest three-round score in program history. Bucher had also earned a first-place finish at the 2013 Navy-Mount St. Mary's dual match.
"Renata held onto her 36-hole lead to claim first place," Navy head coach Nadia Ste-Marie said. "Her scoring this spring has been consistent and has given her more opportunities to finish in the top 10. I am thrilled to see her capture the individual honors at our invitational."
Bucher finished nine strokes ahead of Fairfield's Emma Ritzman's second-place showing of 251. This is Bucher's third top-10 finish this season and her best placing since taking second place at the Bulldog Florida Invitational in March.
Fairfield won the team title with an overall score of 1031 (342-346-343) to finish 12 strokes ahead of second-place Navy's total score of 1043 (348-351-344). Monmouth was third at 1054 (345-354-355) and St. Francis Brooklyn finished fourth at 1113 (377-371-365).
Navy entered Monday's final round tied with Monmouth for second place, but shot 11 strokes better than the Hawks to hold on to second place.
"It was great to see the team play well going into today's round tied for second and shoot our low round of the tournament," said Ste-Marie. "It is great to see all of the hard work the team has put into their games this spring show up on the scoreboard."
Navy freshman Katie Ryall tied for fourth place individually with a three-round score of 254 (84-86-84). Ryall earned the first top-five finish of her career and was just three stokes out of second place.
Senior captain Grace Dalton rallied from a slow start on Sunday to shoot an 82 on Monday to tie for 15th place with a 278 (100-96-82). Dalton tied with Navy freshman Marci Browning, who also carded a 278 (95-88-95). Sophomore Melia Lagat placed 19th with a 283 (92-95-96).
Navy will next compete at the Patriot League Championship from Saturday to Sunday at Lehigh's Saucon Valley Country Club.
