LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Navy women's golf team opened the 2013 fall season by shooting a three-round score of 1,112 (374-374-364) at the Lady Bison Classic at the Bucknell Golf Course this weekend. The Lady Bison Classic consisted of two rounds on Saturday and one round on Sunday at the par-70 course. Navy placed 16th of 17 teams while shaving 10 strokes off its final round with a 364 after two rounds of 374 on Saturday.
"The tournament went well for being our first tournament of the season," head coach Nadia Ste-Marie said. "It was great to improve our score by 10 shots on the second day. We are on the right track and we are excited to be hosting our fall tournament in two weeks."
William & Mary won the team title with an overall score of 912 and Columbia (922) and Seton Hall (922) tied for second. Michelle Piyapattra of Columbia and Victoria Nguyen of Siena shared individual medalist honors by each shooting a total score of 12-over par 222.
The Mids competed against three Patriot League schools at the Lady Bison Classic. Host Bucknell placed sixth (946), Boston University was seventh (955) and Lehigh tied for ninth (976).
Sophomore Renata Bucher (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was Navy's low-scorer with a three-day score of 252 (83-89-80). Bucher tied for 53rd overall out of 89 players. Bucher shot her best round, a 10-over par 80, on Sunday.
"Renata is playing well and she had a good first tournament," said Ste-Marie. "It was very good to see her bring her score back down in the last round and she almost broke 80."
Freshman Katie Ryall (Colorado Springs, Colo.) turned in Navy's second lowest score in her collegiate debut. Ryall placed 78th by carding an overall score of 274 (94-92-88).
"Katie improved every day," Ste-Marie said. "She is really finding herself out there and is playing well."
Navy will next host the seven-team Chesapeake Bay Invitational at the Naval Academy Golf Club September 22-23.
