Oct. 15, 2013
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Navy women's golf team placed 20th at the Rutgers Invitational with a 719 (364-355) at the par-72 Rutgers University Golf Course this Monday and Tuesday. Delaware won the team title with a total two-round score of 27-over par 603 (302-301) to edge out second-place Seton Hall (+32, 302-306=608) by five strokes at the 20-team meet.
"It was a nice course and the weather was great," head coach Nadia Ste-Marie said. "We struggled a bit with our putting and it was like our home course where if you aren't on the low side of the hole, it can be tough to judge the break. But we are still growing and we are getting stronger as a team. We will continue to work in practice and hopefully it will pay off at our next meet at Lehigh."
Freshman Katie Ryall (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was Navy's top finisher for the first time in her career. Ryall tied for 76th with a total score of 168 (+24). Ryall shot an 86 on Monday and an 82 on Tuesday. The 10-over par 82 is the best round to date of her rookie season. In each of Navy's three tournaments this fall, Ryall has improved her score from the first round to the second.
Sophomore Renata Bucher (Colorado Springs, Colo.) finished just one stroke behind Ryall in a tie for 79th place with an overall score of 169. Bucher opened with a 10-over par 82 on Monday before shooting an 87 on Tuesday.
Freshman Marci Browning (Canal Winchester, Ohio) was the third finisher on Navy's travel squad and the 110th overall. Browning shot a 187 (92-95). Sophomore Melia Lagat (Bremerton, Wash.) shot the best round of her career on Tuesday with a 91, improving 13 strokes from Monday for an overall score of 195.
Seton Hall's Erin McClure earned medalist honors by shooting a 2-over par 146 (73-73). Long Island's Marisol Doglioli and Delaware's Amanda Terzian tied for second with total scores of 147 (+3).
Navy's fourth and final fall tournament will be the Lehigh Invitational from October 27-28. The Mids will then have a three-and-a-half month break before opening their spring schedule at Butler's Bulldog Florida Invitational in Jacksonville from March 12-13.
