Women's Golf to Open Spring Schedule at the Kiawah Island Classic
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's golf team will open its spring season at the 42-team Edwin Watts / Kiawah Island Classic from Sunday to Tuesday at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort in Kiawah Island, S.C.
The three-round tournament will be played at both the Osprey Point course (par-72, 5,964) and the Oak Point course (par-72, 5,941 yards) at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort. Tournament play will begin at 8:45 AM each day and live results will be available. Navy will start in the afternoon wave (1:00 PM) on Sunday's opening day of competition.
Four Patriot League women's golf program will be competing at the tournament as Navy will be joined by Boston University, Bucknell and Richmond. College of Charleston is the host school of the tournament.
Through Navy's four fall tournaments, McDonnell leads the team in scoring average at 76.0. Frazier is second at 77.5 and Walker is also under 80 at 79.8 strokes per round. Augenstein is fourth on the team at 80.0 strokes per round.
All four golfers are below the current Navy individual single season program record of 80.1, which was set by Walker last season.
McDonnell won the Sacred Heart Invitational in the fall with a two-round score of 151 (75-76; +7). She was also the individual runner up at the Navy Fall Invitational with a three-round score of 219 (75-68-76; +3). The 4-under par 68 in the second round was the lowest single round in school history.
As a team Navy is averaging 312.9, which is nine strokes better than the current single season school record of 322.2, which was set last season.
Navy opened the fall season with a string solid performances under sixth-year head coach Nadia Ste-Marie, placing third at the Tignanelli Towson Invitational, second at the Navy Fall Invitational and second at the Sacred Heart Invitational.
This will be Navy's second year competing at the Kiawah Island Classic. Navy placed 37th out of 40 teams back in 2015.
The Kiawah Island Classic is the first of five spring events for the Midshipmen.
Navy will next play a dual match against the University of San Francisco at the Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach, Calif. on March 12. The Mids will also compete at the Checkmate Match Play Challenge at the Seaview Resort in Galloway, N.J. from March 31 to April 1.
Navy will play back-to-back events at home in the month of April. The Mids will first host the Navy Spring Invitational at the Naval Academy Golf Club from April 7-8 and then the 2018 Patriot League Women's Golf Championship from April 21-22. This will be Navy's second time hosting the Patriot League Championship (2015).
