ANNAPOLIS, Md. -
The Navy women's golf team will open its spring season with a pair of meets this week. Navy will first play at the Bulldog Florida Invitational from Wednesday to Thursday followed by the Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate from Sunday to Tuesday.
Both the Navy men's and women's golf teams will be competing in the Bulldog Florida Invitational, which is hosted by Butler. Navy will play 36 holes over the two-day tournament at the Windsor Parke Golf Club in Jacksonville, Florida.
At the Bulldog Florida Invitational, Navy and Butler will be joined by IPFW, Eastern Illinois, Western Illinois, Chicago State, Youngstown State, Delaware State and Savannah State.
Following the Bulldog Florida Invitational, the Navy women's golf team will compete in William & Mary's three-day Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate at Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, Va.
This is the second year that Navy has competed in William & Mary's spring tournament. Navy made its Division I debut at what was then called the C&F Bank Intercollegiate on March 17, 2013. Navy placed 27th at the rain-shortened two-round event. This year's tournament is scheduled for three rounds and will conclude Tuesday.
The Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate will be played at the River Course, which is home to the LPGA's Kingsmill Championship (May 15-18). Navy will compete in the 13-team field against Fairleigh Dickinson, Hofstra, IUPUI, Lehigh, Longwood, Monmouth, Radford, Sacred Heart, Saint Francis U, William & Mary and Yale (A and B).
Sophomore Renata Bucher was Navy's low scorer in three of the team's four events last fall. Bucher leads Navy with an 83.6 average over nine rounds. Bucher broke 80 twice last fall, with her season-low being a first-round 78 (+6) at Navy's Chesapeake Bay Invitational on September 22.
Freshman Katie Ryall is second on the team with an 87.8 average. A strong finisher, Ryall improved upon her first round score in each of Navy's four events. Ryall shot a team-best 168 (86-82) at the Rutgers Invitational last October.
Along with Bucher and Ryall, head coach Nadia Ste-Marie
will send out senior captain Grace Dalton
, sophomore Melia Lagat
and freshman Marci Browning
at the Bulldog Florida Invitational.
Navy has five meets on its 2014 spring schedule. Following the Bulldog Florida Invitational and the Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate, Navy will play at Georgetown's Hoya Invitational from March 31 to April 1. The Mids will host the inaugural Navy Spring Classic at the Naval Academy Golf Club from April 13-14.
The Mids will close the season at the 2014 Patriot League Championship (April 19-20) at Lehigh. In Navy's first season last spring, the team placed third of four schools at the conference meet. The 2014 championship will feature five schools due to the league's addition of Boston University.
