CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - The Navy women's golf team was voted to finish in fourth place at the upcoming Patriot League Women's Golf Championship, according to a pre-championship poll conducted by the league's head coaches and sports information directors.
The Patriot League announced Thursday that Boston University and Lehigh were tabbed as co-favorites, as each school received 28 points. Bucknell was picked third with 22 points, Navy received 12 points and Holy Cross was picked to finish in fifth place with 10 points.
Lehigh defeated Bucknell by three strokes in the inaugural Patriot League Women's Golf Championship in 2013. Navy placed third at the championship last season, while Holy Cross placed fourth.
Boston University, a Patriot League newcomer, finished in second place at the MAAC Championship last spring. Boston U. had competed in the America East in most of its varsity sports, but played in the MAAC for women's golf.
The 2014 Patriot League Women's Golf Championship will be hosted by Lehigh at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa. on April 19-20. Each participating team is limited to six golfers with the top four scorers each round counting towards the team total. The final team score is determined by totaling all completed rounds. Individual scoring consists of the lowest aggregate score of all completed rounds.
Prior to the league championship meet, the Mids will host the inaugural Navy Spring Classic at the Naval Academy Golf Club from April 13-14. Navy will compete against St. Francis Brooklyn, Monmouth and Fairfield at the four-team meet.
The Navy women's golf program is currently in its second season as a varsity sport.
