ANNAPOLIS, Md. -
The Navy women's golf team will host the four-team Navy Spring Classic at the Naval Academy Golf Club on Sunday and Monday. The 54-hole tournament will be played on a par-72 course that measures 6,005 yards. Navy will compete against Fairfield, Monmouth and St. Francis Brooklyn.
A total of 36 holes will be played on Sunday and 18 holes will be played on Monday. Both days will have shotgun starts at 9:00 AM.
Navy has been paced this season by sophomore Renata Bucher and her team-best 82.1 average. Bucher placed second at the Bulldog Florida Invitational with a 158 and also placed eighth at the Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate with a 158. Bucher was an honorable mention for the Patriot League Women's Golf Player of the Month for March.
Freshman Katie Ryall is second on the team with an 88.3 average. Ryall shot a 79 in the second round of the Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate last month for the lowest round of her collegiate career. Ryall has improved her score from the first round to the second round in all seven events she has played in this season.
All four schools that will be in action this weekend competed against each other at the Rutgers Invitational in October. Fairfield placed 13th with a 650, Monmouth was 17th with a 664, St. Francis Brooklyn was 19th at 684 and Navy was 20th with a 719.
The Navy Spring Classic will be the fifth event that Navy has hosted at the Naval Academy Golf Club since becoming a varsity program prior to the 2013 spring season.
This will be Navy's last competition before playing in the 2014 Patriot League Championship from April 19-20 at Lehigh's Saucon Valley Country Club. Navy placed third out of four teams at the inaugural league championship in 2013 and this year's field will consist of five teams with the addition of Boston University to the Patriot League. Navy was picked to finish fourth in the pre-championship poll.
