ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's golf team will compete at the 2014 Patriot League Championship at Lehigh's Upper Saucon Valley Country Club from Saturday to Sunday. This is the second annual Patriot League Women's Golf Championship. Play will begin at 8:30 AM each day and live results will be available.
The league championship will be a 54-hole event, with the first 36 on Saturday and the final 18 on Sunday. Each participating team is limited to six golfers with the top four scorers each round counting towards the team total. The final team score is determined by totaling all completed rounds. Individual scoring consists of the lowest aggregate score of all completed rounds.
The individual champion will be named the Patriot League Women's Golfer of the Year, while the highest finishing freshman will be the Rookie of the Year. There will also be a 10-member All-Patriot League Team, based on finish at the championship. The top five finishers (including ties) make the all-league first-team squad, and all remaining finishers up to 10th place (including ties) qualify for the second-team.
Navy placed third out of four teams at the inaugural Patriot League Championship last spring in its first season as a varsity intercollegiate program. Lehigh won the team title with a 942, while Bucknell (944) was a close second. Navy placed third with a 1054 and Holy Cross was fourth (1116).
Sophomore Renata Bucher and 2013 graduate Catherine Reed were Navy's top finishers at last year's Patriot League Women's Golf Championship. Bucher and Reed tied for 12th place by each shooting three-round totals of 258.
Bucher was the individual medalist at last weekend's Navy Spring Classic at the Naval Academy Golf Club. Bucher fired a first-place score of 242 (77-82-83) to help Navy place second at the four-team invite. Bucher's opening round score of 77 was the lowest of her career.
Bucher has placed in the top 10 at three of her last four events and she leads the team with an 81.8 average. Bucher was the individual runner-up at the Bulldog Florida Invite in March after shooting a 158 (78-80).
Freshman Katie Ryall is second on the team with an 87.7 average. Ryall tied for fourth place at the Navy Spring Classic last weekend with a 254 (84-86-84), for her first top 10 finish. Senior captain Grace Dalton has the third-best average on the team at 94.8 and freshman Marci Browning averages a 95.9.
Patriot League newcomer Boston University has been voted as the co-favorites along with defending champion and host Lehigh to win this year's team title. Bucknell was picked to finish third in the pre-championship poll, followed by Navy and Holy Cross.
