ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy women's golf team looks to make history this weekend as it will compete in the inaugural Patriot League Championship at the Bucknell Golf Course in Lewisburg, Pa. Action will start with 36 holes on Saturday and finish with 18 holes on Sunday on the par-70 course.
Each team will field six players, with the top four scores in each round counted for the team score. The individual medalist earns the Patriot League Most Outstanding Player award, while the highest-finishing freshman is named the Rookie of the Year. A five-member All-Patriot League Team is also determined by championship finish.
The field consists of four teams in search of the first Patriot League Women's Golf Championship, as Navy, Lehigh, Holy Cross and Bucknell will compete for the title. The first groups tee off at 8:00 AM on Saturday, with afternoon tee times beginning around 1:00 PM. Sunday's final 18 holes will tee off at 8:00 AM.
Navy's top five in the lineup will likely consist of two freshmen (Renata Bucher and Melia-Mae Lagat), two seniors (Catherine Reed and Natalie Crow) and a junior (Grace Dalton). The sixth spot will probably be filled by one of three players, Jennifer Coletta, Christina Carson or Gina Grabowski.
Bucher, a freshman from Colorado Springs, Colo., leads Navy with an 84.2 average and just came off a strong performance at the Mount St. Mary's Invitational. She placed in a tie for 12th after recording rounds of 79-82-83=244. The 79 was the lowest round for a Midshipmen this year. She has recorded eight of the 10 best rounds this spring for the Midshipmen.
Reed, a senior team captain from Tipp City, Ohio, follows with an 87.6 scoring average and is also coming off her best performance of her career, finishing in a tie for 21st with an 84-83-82=249 at the Mount St. Mary's Invitational earlier this week. Reed has had 10 of her 12 rounds be in the 80s this year. Between Reed and Bucher, the duo has recorded Navy's top 18 scores of the year, all rounds of 88 and below.
Grace Dalton (Jr. / Malvern, Pa.) follows with a 94.8 average and Natalie Crow (Sr. / San Jose, Calif.) rounds out Navy's top four averages with a 98.3.
As a team, the Midshipmen average a 366.5 team score.
This will be the final competition of the year for the Midshipmen.
