Women's Golf to Host the Navy Fall Invitational Saturday-Sunday
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's golf program will host the fifth-annual Navy Fall Invitational this Saturday and Sunday at the Naval Academy Golf Club. The 54-hole tournament will feature 36 holes on Saturday and 18 holes on Sunday. Play will begin at 9:00 AM each day with shotgun starts. The Naval Academy Golf Club plays 6,085 yards and is a par 72.
Navy will be joined by Boston University, The Citadel, Delaware State, Fairleigh Dickinson, La Salle, Lehigh, Longwood, Monmouth, Richmond, Sacred Heart and Wagner at the 12-team tournament.
Navy opened its 2017-18 season last weekend at the Tignanelli Towson Invitational. The Mids placed third in the nine-team field with a two-round score of 624 (310-314; +48). The 624 was Navy's third-best 36-hole tournament score in program history and Navy's third-place finish was its highest in four years of competition at the Tignanelli Towson Invitational.
Sophomore Morgan Frazier was Navy's top finisher at Towson, tying for sixth place with a two-round score of 152 (72-80; +8). Senior Christine Walker also finished in the top-10, tying for ninth place with a 154 (77-77; +10). Senior Legare Augenstein and freshman Christine McDonnell tied for 20th place at Towson with matching scores of 161 (+17).
Navy's starting lineup for this weekend will consist of Frazier, Walker, Augenstein, McDonnell and senior captain Jane Moon. Competing as individuals for Navy this weekend will be freshman Emily Root, sophomore Abby Schroeder and sophomore Micah Vincent.
Through two rounds this season, Frazier leads Navy in scoring average with a 76.0 and Walker is second with a 77.0. Augenstein and McDonnell are tied for third in scoring average at 80.5 and Moon is averaging an 81.5. As a team, Navy is averaging a 312.0, down from 322.2 last season.
There will be four Patriot League teams competing at the Navy Fall Invitational this season in Navy, Boston University, Lehigh and Richmond. Richmond won the 2017 Patriot League Women's Golf Championship.
The Mids placed fifth at the Navy Fall Invitation last season with a two-round score of 630 (310-320; +54). Harvard won the team title with a score of 615.
Navy will next have three weeks off before returning to action at the Sacred Heart Invitational from Oct. 15-16 at the Great River Golf Course in Milford, Conn. Navy placed second out of five teams at the Sacred Heart Invitational last season.
