ANNAPOLIS, Md. -
The Navy women's lacrosse team defeated the Japan National Team, 16-12, in an exhibition match at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Sunday.
Navy jumped out to a 7-2 lead after 10 minutes and carried a 9-5 lead into halftime. After Japan cut the lead to 9-6 early in the second half, Navy went on a 6-1 run over a 10-minute span to put the game out of reach.
"This was a good win for us today against a good Japan team," head coach Cindy Timchal said. "We were pleased with how we played and we know this game will help prepare us for the upcoming season-opener against Winthrop."
Sophomore attacker Loren Generi (Bayport, N.Y.) led Navy with five points on four goals and one assist and also collected a game-high five draw controls. Senior attacker Kathy Young (Berwyn, Pa.) and junior attacker Aimee Gennaro (Havertown, Pa.) each had three goals and one assist for four points.
Senior attacker Jasmine DePompeo (Sayville, N.Y.) had one goal and two assists for three points. Also with multi-point efforts for Navy were senior midfielder Beth Young (Berwyn, Pa.) with two goals (and five ground balls) and junior midfielder Jill Coughlin (Annapolis, Md.) had one goal and one assist.
Senior goalie Charlotte Hauser (Greenfield Center, N.Y.) played a team-high 28:49, making five saves and allowing five goals.
Japan's Akiko Wada scored a game-high six goals and Ryoko Ikura scored twice.
Navy outshot Japan, 33-25, and had the advantage in draw controls (16-14) and ground balls (30-23).
Nine different players scored at least one point for Navy and 33 players saw action, including three goalies.
Navy will officially open the 2013 season at home against Winthrop on Sunday, February 10 at 12 noon.
