ANNAPOLIS, Md. - No. 18/12 Navy women's lacrosse attackers Loren Generi (Jr., Bayport, N.Y.) and Aimee Gennaro (Sr., Havertown, Pa.) accumulated 17 points on nine goals and eight assists en route to a 21-2 victory over Campbell on Friday at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Generi's 11 points (5g, 6a) ties for third-best in program history for points in a single game (11 by Erin Rawlick vs. Niagara; 3/15/09).
"We worked a lot on our offensive movement and spacing in practice earlier in the week and I think you could see the results on the field today," said head coach Cindy Timchal on Navy's 21-goal performance.
Navy's 21 goals ties for the third-highest total in a home opener in program history. Generi's 11 points and six assists both were career bests. Followed by Generi's 11-point total, co-captains Gennaro and Jill Coughlin (Sr., Annapolis, Md.) combined for 11 points on nine goals and two assists. Gennaro and Coughlin each extended their streak of consecutive games with a goal to 18 and five, respectively.
"We were excited to play lacrosse, especially with the crappy weather we have been having, with the warmer weather today and the spark we had early in the contest helped us to do well on offense and get the win," said Gennaro on today's offensive success.
Navy (2-0) came out firing in the first half, scoring five goals in a span of 6:37. Gennaro scored her first two goals of the contest within the first 2:03. Miranda Beal (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.), Casey Browne (Jr., Miller Place, N.Y.) and Coughlin continued the offensive charge for the Mids, scoring in that order to grab the early 5-0 lead.
Campbell (0-1) responded a minute later, as Maddy Dolinar forced a Navy defender to foul her and create a free-position opportunity. Dolinar fired her shot past Navy goalkeeper Annie Foky
(Jr., Charlottesville, Va.) to cut the deficit to four, 5-1.
As Navy led 5-1 with 22:23 left in the half, Generi took over on the offensive end. In a 12-minute and 47-second span, from the 17-minute mark down to 4:13, Generi recorded six points on four goals and two assists to extend Navy's lead to 11, 12-1.
Coughlin and Katie Gallagher (So., Bel Air, Md.) ended the half with back-to-back goals and give Navy a 13-goal lead, 14-1.
Navy continued its success in the second half, going on a 7-0 run to bring its lead to 20, 21-1. The Mids saw freshmen Maggie Nantz (California, Md.), Kaitlan Moynihan (Bel Air, Md.) and Aislinn Probst (Arnold, Md.) score their first collegiate goals of the season during the run.
Foky earned the win for Navy, allowing just two goals in net. Campbell goalkeeper Brittany Kincer earned the loss, tallying five saves on 19 chances in the first 30 minutes of play. Teammate Merredit Bechler relieved Kincer in the second half, recording three saves on 10 chances.
Navy will look to extend its perfect record, in the midst of its three-game homestand, against Liberty on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The game is slated for 4 p.m. and live stats will be available on navysports.com.
