Final Stats

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – No. 19/12 Navy women’s lacrosse (4-0) defeated Davidson (0-2), 14-5, on Sunday at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The Mids defense caused havoc to the Wildcats offense, causing 16 of their 21 total turnovers.

“The defense was solid today,” head coach Cindy Timchal said. “It was great to be able to hold Davidson scoreless in the first half and allowing just one shot on net through 30 minutes. We hope to carry our defensive success on Wednesday when we travel to Philadelphia to play Villanova.”

Navy shut down Davidson’s offense, holding the Wildcats to eight total shots on net (1 in the first half). Midfielder Lindsay Rheiner (Jr., Wycombe, Pa.) paced the Mids defense, causing a career-best four turnovers and recording four ground balls.

The Mids jumped out to an early 4-0 lead through the first 10 minutes of the contest. Senior co-captain Jill Coughlin (Annapolis, Md.) sparked the run with the game’s first goal, as Loren Generi (Jr., Bayport, N.Y.) found Coughlin cutting from behind the net with 25:01 remaining in the half. Generi, Miranda Beal (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Aimee Gennaro (Sr., Havertown, Pa.) followed up with goals, in that order, in a span of 4:45. Gennaro’s free-position goal at 20:16 extended her consecutive games with a goal to 20.

Generi extended Navy’s lead to six, 6-0, with a goal at the 12:26 mark and came back with an assist to Kaitlan Moynihan (Fr., Bel Air, Md.) to end the half.

Davidson’s lone offensive opportunity came with 3:36 left in the half. Wildcats’ midfielder Kacey Merlini came slashing into the eight-meter arc and sent her shot on net. Navy goalkeeper Annie Foky (Jr., Charlottesville, Va.) registered her one and only save to preserve the first-half shutout.
Generi added onto her point total with a goal to open up the second half and add to Navy’s lead, 7-0, with 25:32 left.

The Wildcats cut the deficit to five, 7-2, with back-to-back goals from Emily Rademacher and Emma Sissman in a 39-second span.

Navy responded with a 6-1 run to raise its lead to 10, 13-3, with 5:12 left in the contest. Katie Gallagher (So., Bel Air, Md.) led the Mids offense by recording a natural hat trick during the stretch. Cori Caggiano (Fr., Bethesda, Md.) relieved Foky for the final 1:49. Despite allowing two goals in the final minutes of the contest, Caggiano made two terrific free-position saves to preserve the 14-5 win for Navy.

Navy held advantages over Davidson in shots, 30-8, and in ground balls, 24-13. The Wildcats edged the Mids in draw controls, 11-9. Generi led Navy’s offense with nine points on five goals and four assists.

Foky improved to 4-0 between the pipes, tallying two saves on six chances. Davidson goalkeeper Katy Boyle registered 10 saves on 24 chances in the loss.

The Mids will travel to Philadelphia, Pa. to face Villanova on Wednesday, Feb. 26. The game is slated for 3 p.m.
