HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Navy women's lacrosse team secured a fifth straight Patriot League Tournament berth with an 8-6 road win against Colgate (3-9, 2-2 PL) on Saturday at Tyler's Field. Navy is now 13-2 overall and 4-0 in Patriot League play.

The Mids have won 13 of their last 14 games and a win against American next Friday would clinch the league's regular season title and hosting responsibilities for the four-team postseason tournament (April 27-29). Navy has qualified for the league tournament in each of its first five years as a varsity program and won the tournament title in each of the past two seasons.

"It was a great win in a tight contest against a highly-motivated Colgate team on their home field," head coach Cindy Timchal said. "It was very nice to get scoring from a lot of different people today. Now we are keeping our focus to one game at a time and trying to be well-prepared for our next opponent in American and we know they are always a tough team."

Saturday's game was a defensive battle and the 14 combined goals was the lowest total in a game for Navy since May 8, 2010 when the Mids defeated Sacred Heart, 12-2, in the NCAA Play-In game.

Junior goalie Michelle Verbeeck (Wading River, N.Y.) earned her first start of the season and played the full 60 minutes. Verbeeck made seven saves in the contest and increased her season record to 3-0. Verbeeck has always played well against Colgate and is 4-0 all-time against the school.

Verbeeck has played roughly 40 percent of Navy's total goalie minutes this season and ranks No. 1 in the Patriot League with a 7.72 goals-against average and a .505 save percentage.

Navy got off to a fast start with sophomore attack Aimee Gennaro (Havertown, Pa.) scoring just 34 seconds in. Junior midfielder Kathy Young (Berwyn, Pa.) added another tally three minutes later before Courtney Miller put Colgate on the board.

The Mids would answer with a quick 2-0 spurt spanning just 13 seconds, as sophomore midfielder Jill Coughlin (Annapolis, Md.) scored an unassisted tally with 18:40 to go in the first and then freshman midfielder Jess Fellows (Vienna, Va.) scored at 18:27 off a pass from freshman attack Loren Generi (Bayport, N.Y.).

The Raiders responded to the three-goal deficit with two straight tallies, but junior Emily Mellin (Sherwood Forest, Md.) scored off a pass from junior attack Jasmine DePompeo (Sayville, N.Y.) to send the Mids into the break leading 5-3.

Navy carried momentum into the second half as Young scored her second of the game, followed by a strike from DePompeo at 27:02. Both goals came within a 37-second span, and then Colgate added a goal one minute later.

After 12 minutes of neither team scoring, Navy's final goal of the day came with 14:11 to go when Generi scored from Mellin to put the Mids up, 8-4. Colgate scored on two free-position attempts in the game's final 12 minutes, but could not get closer than the 8-6 final.

Kathy Young scored twice to lead seven different goal scorers and her twin sister, Beth Young registered four ground balls. Mellin also had three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Navy outshot Colgate, 19-14, and held a 9-7 edge in draw controls. Colgate led in ground balls, 16-14 and the Raiders were 2-for-4 on free-positions attempts, while the Mids were 0-for-5.

Katie Sullivan had a team-high two goals for the Raiders, who were held to their lowest scoring total of the season.

After losing its first three games in the all-time series to Colgate, Navy has won five in a row to take a 5-3 edge. Saturday's contest was a rematch of the 2011 league title game, which Navy won, 15-14.

The Navy-American game on Friday, April 13 will be held at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium and televised by CBS Sports Network. The game will be Navy's `Senior Night' and the Mids are 8-0 at home in 2012. Navy defeated American last season in Washington, D.C., 11-10.
