Navy's All-Tournament Team honorees: Michelle Verbeeck (40), Aimee Gennaro (23), Loren Generi (15) and MVP Kathy Young (38)
April 29, 2012
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Led by seven-goal performances from junior Kathy Young (Berwyn, Pa.) and sophomore Aimee Gennaro (Havertown, Pa.), the Navy women's lacrosse team (17-2) won its third straight Patriot League Championship by defeating Holy Cross (10-8), 18-11, on Sunday afternoon at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
"I'm really happy for the team and it was a total team effort today," 2012 Patriot League Coach of the Year Cindy Timchal said. "We had a good fast start and we kept plugging away and built up a good second-half lead today to drive us to the championship. I think we put a punctuation on the season today by winning the tournament after winning the Patriot League Regular Season outright."
Young and Gennaro now share the Patriot League Tournament record for most goals in game (7) and Gennaro broke the record for most goals in a tournament (11).
"It was such a team effort today," Young said. "We've been working toward this since we came back to school in August and this is a great day."
Young was chosen as the Patriot League Tournament's Most Valuable Player and was joined on the all-tournament team by Gennaro, freshman attacker Loren Generi (Bayport, N.Y.) and junior goalie Michelle Verbeeck (Wading River, N.Y.).
Young scored 10 goals over the two-game tournament and established a new career-high with her seven goals on Sunday while Gennaro matched her personal high. The seven goals are one shy of the Navy single-game record. Both Gennaro and Young took nine shots on the game, all of which were on goal. Young also added three draw controls while Gennaro had two ground balls.
Young increased her career goal total to 131, moving into second place on the school's all-time list. Young also leads the team with 57 goals this season and the all-league first-teamer makes her first appearance on an all-tournament team.
Both Young and Gennaro scored three goals in the first half and four in the second. Gennaro scored the game's first goal and then Young scored three of the next four as Navy jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Gennaro would add two more goals in the second half, with one coming with 24 seconds remaining as Navy took an 8-4 lead into the locker room.
The duo then keyed two important runs in the second half as Navy pulled away from Holy Cross. Gennaro scored twice and Young once in a 3-0 run that opened Navy's lead to 13-6 and then the Philly-area tandem both scored twice in a 4-0 spurt over just 2:16 as the Mids increased its lead to 17-8, its largest of the game.
Senior Danielle Vivonetto (Rocky Point, N.Y.) scored Navy's final goal with 1:31 remaining for the team's 18th of the day, a new league championship game record.
Generi, the league's rookie of the year, controlled eight draws and Navy led 18-13 in the category. Generi has 112 draw controls on the season, which is the Navy school record and the fourth-best total in NCAA history.
Verbeeck improved her season record to 7-0 by making four saves in the contest. Junior defender Brijet Mall (Cumming, Ga.) had a solid game defensively, with two ground balls, two caused turnovers and three draw controls and senior defender Dominique Wright (Washington, D.C.) caused two turnovers.
Laura Ryan's five-points led the Crusaders and Maddie Carrellas added four points of her own.
Navy is the first school to win three straight tournament titles since the league began postseason play in 2001 and the 2012 team matched the program record for wins in a season (17). Navy is in just its fifth year of varsity play.
The Mids earned the right to host the postseason tournament after going a perfect 6-0 in the Patriot League Regular Season. The Mids took full advantage of playing on their home field, as the team moved to 11-0 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
Navy will next play at MPSF-Champion Oregon in an NCAA Play-In game next Saturday. The Mids will be looking for a third straight NCAA Tournament berth.
