Navy Welcomes Team Japan for Exhibition Game Sunday

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's lacrosse team will host the Japan National Team in an exhibition match as a tune-up for the 2013 season on Sunday at 11:00 AM at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Live statistics will be available on NavySports.com(.) Admission is free and parking is $5.
While in the United States, Japan will also play exhibition matches against Maryland, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins and Loyola. Japan is preparing for the 2013 Women's Lacrosse World Cup, which will be held in July in Oshawa, Canada. Japan placed seventh out of sixteen teams in the last Women's Lacrosse World Cup in 2009.
Navy will officially begin the 2013 campaign next Sunday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium against Winthrop at 12 noon.
Navy won a third straight Patriot League Championship in 2012 and advanced to a third straight NCAA Tournament. Navy was 18-3 overall and went a perfect 6-0 in the Patriot League to earn its first regular-season title and hosting duties for the 2012 Patriot League Tournament.
The Mids finished the 2012 season ranked No. 19 in the deBeer Media Poll and the team is receiving votes in this season's preseason poll. Navy has also been picked to finish first in the Patriot League Preseason Poll.
The Mids will return nine starters for the 2013 season, including all seven of its starting attackers and midfielders.
Highlighting Navy's offense will be senior co-captain Jasmine DePompeo. DePompeo is a two-time Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year and has been named the 2013 Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.
No active player in NCAA Division I women's lacrosse has scored more points than DePompeo did over the last two seasons. From 2011-12, the attacker scored 191 points on 102 goals and 89 assists.
Joining DePompeo on the Patriot League All-Preseason Team is sophomore midfielder Jess Fellows, senior defender Brijet Mall (19 ground balls) and senior goalie Michelle Verbeeck (8-1, 8.15 GAA). Fellows scored 47 points last season and was named to the All-Patriot League Second Team.
Other key returning players for Navy include sophomore attacker and 2012 Patriot League Rookie of the Year Loren Generi (59 points, 118 draw controls), junior attacker Aimee Gennaro (56 points) and All-Patriot League First-Teamer senior Kathy Young (58 goals, 62 points).
Joining Fellows on Navy's midfield line will be senior Beth Young (35 ground balls, 36 draw controls) and junior Jill Coughlin (28 points). Returning on Navy's defense with Mall is senior co-captain Emily Mellin (30 ground balls).
Head coach Cindy Timchal will begin her 31st season as a Division I coach in 2013. Timchal has a career record of 412-108 (.792) and is 76-22 (.776) in five seasons at Navy.
