Navy won a third-straight Patriot League Tournament Championship in 2012 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third-consecutive year. Navy was 18-3 overall and a perfect 6-0 during conference play. The Mids are once again the favorites to win the Patriot League in 2013, according to the league's preseason poll.
Head coach Cindy Timchal is set to begin her sixth season at Navy and her 31st season overall as a Division I head coach. Timchal became the first college lacrosse coach to win 400 games during the 2012 season and was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in the fall of 2012. She has a career record of 412-108 (.792) and is 76-22 (.776) at Navy.
The Mids return nine starters from the 2012 squad, including all seven of its attackers and midfielders. Senior attacker Jasmine DePompeo (Sayville, N.Y.) was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year in 2011 and 2012 and is the Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year for the 2013 season. DePompeo led Navy in scoring in each of the past two seasons, tallying 99 points in 2011 and 92 points in 2012.
DePompeo and senior defender Emily Mellin
(Sherwood, Forest, Md.) will serve as Navy's co-captains in 2013.
Navy defeated the Japan National Team last weekend in an exhibition game, 16-12. Sophomore attacker Loren Generi (Bayport, N.Y.), the 2012 Patriot League Rookie of the Year, led Navy with four goals and one assist for five points and also had five draw controls.
Navy also received three goals and one assist each from senior attacker Kathy Young (Berwyn, Pa.) and junior attacker Aimee Gennaro (Havertown, Pa.).
Sunday will be the first-ever meeting between Navy and Winthrop and the Mids are 11-3 all-time against schools that are current members of the Big South conference. Also, Navy is 5-0 all-time in home openers. Navy has also won 12-straight home games and is approaching the program record of 14.
Winthrop will open its inaugural season on Friday at 3:00 PM at Howard. The Eagles have two transfers that have played college lacrosse at other schools, but the majority of the team's roster is made up of freshmen.
The head coach of Winthrop is John Sung, who has experience in leading a first-year program from his time at Division III Adrian College.
The Mids have a competitive non-conference schedule this season and a highlight will be hosting defending national champion and preseason No. 1 Northwestern on March 11. Navy will also play three other teams that are picked to win their conference this season in High Point (Big South), Monmouth (Northeast) and Jacksonville (Atlantic Sun). Navy will also play Richmond, last season's runner-up in the Atlantic 10. Jacksonville and Richmond are first-time opponents for Navy.
Navy is receiving votes in both the preseason IWLCA Coaches Poll and the deBeer Media Poll.
Navy's next game will be at Liberty in Lynchburg, Va. next Saturday at 12 noon.
