Women's Lacrosse Jumps to No. 7 in US Lacrosse Top 20 Poll
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy women's lacrosse team moved up three spots in the Nike / US Lacrosse Division I Top 20 Poll, as announced by US Lacrosse Magazine on Monday.
The Mids opened up the season with a 9-7 victory over Big Ten opponent Ohio State in a torrential downpour on Saturday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. In the game, Jenna Collins (Clarksville, Md.) led the team with four goals and an assist, while Molly O'Sullivan (Centreville, Md.) and Andie O'Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) each chipped in a pair of goals apiece. For her efforts, M. O'Sullivan was named Patriot League Attacker of the Week.
Navy trailed Ohio State, 1-0, before five goals by the Midshipmen, including three in a row by Collins gave the home team a 5-1 edge. The Mids went into halftime up 6-3 overall. The Buckeyes scored the opening goal of the second half, but back-to-back goals by A. O'Sullivan and M. O'Sullivan pushed the Midshipmen advantage to 8-4. Navy was able to hold on for the 9-7 victory thanks to tremendous defense, including a 10-save effort by senior goalie Ingrid Boyum (Herndon, Va.).
Navy returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 17, as the Midshipmen welcome Columbia to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The game is part of a doubleheader with the men's team with the women's team beginning at 11:00 a.m.
